There are many different ways to write out the date on a letter. How you write the date depends on what kind of letter you’re writing. For instance, there are very strict rules if you're writing a formal letter , but the location of the date doesn't matter as much in an informal letter . Picking the appropriate format for the date on your letter can be a little confusing, but it’s easy once you understand the differences.

Writing the Date on a Formal Letter

Step 1 Put the date flush with the left margin.

Step 2 Place your date 1 to 2 lines after the sender’s address.

  • Use the same formatting throughout the rest of your letter. For example, if you skipped 1 line between the address and the date, skip 1 line between the date and the recipient’s information . Consistent formatting will make your letter look neat and organized.
  • If you’re using a professional letterhead that includes the sender’s address in the header, your date will be written first in your letter.

Step 3 Write out the full date with no abbreviations.

Writing the Date on a Semi-Formal Letter

Follow the UK/US pattern of day/month/year or the pattern followed in many other countries; month/day/year. Style dictates spelling out the month.

You may write:

January 1, 2005 (or) Jan 1, 2005

You can see that we can put either the date first or the month; both ways are acceptable. In India, we usually give the date in the order – day/month/year. However, Americans usually prefer the order – month/day/year. This difference could give rise to a problem.For example, you write a letter to an American on 2.1.2005. He might think the letter to be written on the first of February rather than the second of January. To avoid such confusion, you can use words instead of only numbers. It is better to spell the name of the month.

Position of the Date

You can add Date on the Right side or Left but should be in Top Position very near to the TO or Heading of the Letter. It is okay to use both Right & Left alignments for Date on a Letter. 

British Date Format in Letter

This is a very well-known & most used Date format in the world. European countries, South America, Africa, Asia, Mexico, Oceania, and Central America (besides Belize), use the day-month-year(DD MM YYYY) format.

Tips for Adding a Date in a Letter

  • Sometimes you may ignore adding the Year in the Date of the letter.
  • We find many letters which say: Date: 2.1. 2014. We do not need to specify that 2.1.2014 is a date . In case we think the date 2.1.2014 can be mistaken for something else.
  • It would be better to put it in words – 2 January 2014. There is another advantage in giving the date in this way.
  • Put the date on which the letter was written in the format Month Day Year i.e. August 30, 2003. Skip a line between the date and the inside address.
  • If you refer to other correspondence, quote the date of the letter/s reference numbers, file numbers, order numbers, and the cheque numbers with a date.
If you are writing a formal letter through an email, then you do not need to add the date, as it will automatically be indicated on the email.

How to Write Dates

To write the exact date, spell out the month, and write the day and the year in numerals. The American date format is month-day-year, with a comma between day and year ( May 1, 2022) , while the British format is day-month-year, with no comma between month and year ( 1 May 2022 ). Don’t use ordinal numbers in dates in formal texts ( May 1 st , 2022 ). You may also show the day of the week ( Sunday, May 1, 2022 ).

If only the month and year are shown, don’t insert a comma between the two ( May 2022 ). To specify the day alone, write it as an ordinal number ( We arrive on the first ).

The American date format is month-day-year. In running text, spell out the month, and write the day and year in numerals. Use commas to separate day and year. Don’t use ordinals ( st , nd , rd , th ).

  • The Declaration of Independence was issued on July 4, 1776 .
  • They were married on October 25, 2019, on a beach in the Maldives.
  • On January 20, 2021, Joe Biden became president of the United States.

To set off the year, use commas in pairs: a comma must appear not just before but also after the year.

  • Incorrect: It was on August 14, 1945 that an armistice was finally declared. Correct: It was on August 14, 1945, that an armistice was finally declared.

The British date format is day-month-year. The day and year are written in numerals, and the month is spelled out. No comma is needed between month and year. This system is also followed in much of Europe and the rest of the world.

  • On 15 August 1947 , India gained independence from Britain.
  • The Channel Tunnel opened on 6 May 1992 , linking London and Paris by rail.
  • The UK left the EU on 31 January 2020 .

Date: Month and year

When only month and year are specified, the month appears before the year. No comma is needed between the two.

  • Twitter was founded in March 2006 and launched later that year.
  • In January 2020 , reports of a new respiratory virus emerged from China.
  • Farley first lost the lottery in November 1997 .

The preposition “of” between month and year is unnecessary and omitted in formal writing.

  • This report was originally published in May of 2015 .

Date: Day and month

When it is clear which year is being referred to, you may indicate only day and month. Spell out the month, and write the day in numerals. Remember that day follows month in American usage. Don’t use ordinal numbers ( st , nd , rd , th ).

  • Her birthday is November 23 .
  • The last day to submit your applications is February 10 .
  • On May 11 this year, our astronauts landed on Venus.

In British and other European writing, the day appears before the month.

  • My daughter was born on 23 November last year.
  • The deadline is 10 February .
  • On 11 May this year, our astronauts landed on Mars.

The use of ordinal numbers ( st , nd , rd , th ) in dates is unnecessary. Avoid it in formal writing.

  • Poor: The Durandians landed on July 19th at 3 p.m. Better: The Durandians landed on July 19 at 3 p.m.

In creative and other informal writing, the day and the month are often shown in words.

  • They were married on the nineteenth of September last year.

Date: The day alone

When only the day is mentioned, spell out single-digit numbers. Two-digit days may be either spelled out or written in numerals. Use ordinal numbers ( st , nd , rd , th ).

  • We woke up early on the morning of the fifth .
  • We’ll reach on the sixteenth ( or the 16th ).

Style guides differ in their recommendations on whether to write numbers in numerals or words. Numbers under 10 are generally spelled out. The Chicago Manual of Style recommends spelling out two-digit numbers as well, while the AP Stylebook and APA Publication Manual suggest using figures for numbers from 10 onward.

When using figures, don’t set the ordinal in superscript (16th, not 16 th ).

Date with day of the week

To show a day of the week alongside a date, write the day followed by a comma, and then write the date. This can be helpful in appointments and invitations.

  • American: The apocalypse was expected to happen on Saturday, May 21, 2011 .
  • British: The conference starts on Monday, 8 August 2022 .

The date in numerals

Dates may be written in all numerals . A numeric date format is used when the date is standalone—for example, in a signature. The U.S. date format is month-day-year, while the day-month-year format is followed by the UK and other nations. Slashes or hyphens are used to separate the parts of the date.

  • American : Signed 5-11-21 for May 11, 2021 British: Signed 11-5-21 for 11 May 2021
  • American: Dated 11/5/2021 for November 5, 2021 British: Dated 5/11/2021 for 5 November 2021

All-numeric dates are also written in the YYYY-MM-DD format, as specified by the ISO . This internationally agreed way to show dates is common in government, corporate, and other official usage. One of the benefits of this system is that it makes for easier sorting and storage of files and folders. In file names and data entries, hyphens are generally omitted.

The date in words

Dates are generally written in words rather than numerals in creative writing and legal documents. Spell out the day and the month, but use numerals for the year.

  • Where were you on the night of the fifteenth at 11 p.m.?
  • On the twenty-second of January 2021 , an object landed in Farley’s garden.
  • They left on the first of December .

In formal writing, follow the prescribed format of writing the day and year in figures and spelling out the month.

  • American: On January 22, 2021, an object landed in Farley’s garden. British: On 22 January 2021 , an object landed in Farley’s garden.
  • American: They left on December 1 . British: They left on 1 December .

The month abbreviated

When part of a specific date, the month may be abbreviated . Write the first three letters of the month, followed by a period . Don’t abbreviate May, June, and July. In formal writing, abbreviations for dates are useful in tables and charts but avoided in running text.

In British style, the form is day-month-year.

In AP style, the abbreviations Jan. , Feb. , Aug. , Sept. , Oct. , Nov. , and Dec. are used. The remaining months are not abbreviated.

Periods may be omitted in informal usage, if there are space constraints, or in a fixed format, such as a table. The months June and July are also then abbreviated.

It’s easy to get confused about writing the date in a letter as you’ve probably seen different variations.

Before we get into the details of dating your letter, let me briefly provide you the different dating systems.

Writing Date In America

The American way of dating a letter is to write the month, day, and year (MM-DD-YYYY).

For example:

Writing Date In Europe

In Europe and many other countries in the world, you’ll write the day first, then the month, and the year (DD-MM-YYYY).

How To Date A Letter

Now that we have looked at the different dating systems and how people write the date in different countries, let’s look at how you will write a date on a letter.

In business communications, you have three ways of writing the date :

  • Full block format
  • Indented paragraph format
  • Simplified style format

Full Block Format

In the full block format, you will put the date, recipient’s address, and content of your letter all aligned on the left side of the page.

Your date must be perfectly aligned on the left.

Indented Paragraph Format

The indented paragraph format is one where you will put the date and address indented to the center or the right side of the page.

Typically, you will also need to put the signature on the right side of the page as well.

Simplified Style Format

With the simplified style format, you’ll write the date and address on the left side of the page.

The main difference between the simplified style and the full block is what comes right after the address.

In the full block format, you’ll start with the salutations like (“Dear…”) whereas in the simplified style format, you’ll put the subject line under the address in capital letters.

Here are some tips that you should keep in mind when putting a date on a letter.

In the United States , Belize, and Micronesia, you will need to use the MONTH-DAY-YEAR format.

Some other countries may also use the MONTH-DAY-YEAR format as a secondary option such as Canada and the Philippines.

In most other countries in the world like Europe , South America, Africa, Asia, Mexico, Oceania, and Central America, you’ll need to use the DAY-MONTH-YEAR format.

When using the international standard for writing a numerical date, you’ll need to use dashes (-) to separate the numbers although the slash (/) or dot (.) is also accepted.

In a business letter , you will generally write the date in full where you indicate the month before the day with a comma between the day and the year ( February 1, 20XX ).

You can also choose to put the day before the month and the then year where in this case you will no use any comma ( 1 February 20XX ).

Generally, the date will be represented in cardinal numbers and not ordinal ( February 4 instead of February 4th ).

There are many ways to write dates in words. The most common way to write the date in American English is to write the month first, followed by the day (e.g., January 1, 2022). The most common format in British English is the day first, followed by the month (e.g., 1 January 2022).

American English

In American English, we format the date in the following order: month, day, year.

January 1, 2022

With day of the week:

Monday, January 1, 2022

Examples of sentences with dates:

Another way we can write date ranges is with the words “from” and “to” like this:

  • from 1990 to 1995

We can use “between” when talking about date ranges. This is another common way to mention date range:

  • Between 1990 – 1995 (between 1990 and 1995)

How to Write the Date with the Day of the Week

As mentioned briefly already, here is how we can write the date with the day of the week included.

American English Examples:

*The international standard (ISO 8601) is written as YYYY-MM-DD. This may be used to avoid any confusion when communicating abroad.

How To Write the Date for the IELTS Exam

You can use either British or American English for the IELTS exam. The IELTS examiners will not mark you down for using one format over the other.

However, it is important to be consistent throughout your essay or letter. Choose one format and stick to it.

To announce the date, use ‘it’s.’

For example:

  • Today is Wednesday.

You may have seen other ways of writing dates, such as: Before Christ (BC) and Anno Domini (AD). Anno Domini” is Latin for “in the year of our Lord.

BC follows the date. AD can come before or after the date.

Writing dates can be confusing. Where do the commas go? What if you need to include the day of the week?

Today, we’re teaching you how to write the date correctly every time.

Most of this article will focus on the American date format, but we will cover the differences between British and American English date formats, too.

How to Write Dates

One reason writing dates is so confusing is that there are so many options.

How to write the date varies based on geography, the circumstance, such as how formal you need to be, whether you need the year, and whether you’re using purely numerical forms.

We’ve broken down the different date formats, so you know how to write the date in every situation.

Month-Day-Year

The month-day-year date is the most common format used in America.

When you need to write the entire date, place a comma after the day. Here’s what it looks like:

  • July 4, 1776

When we see the date, we read the day in our heads, or out loud, as ordinal numbers. However, it’s not necessary to actually use ordinal numbers (e.g. 4th) when you write the day.

When you write the month-day-year format in the middle of a sentence, place another comma after the year.

  • America was founded on July 4, 1776, when the Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence.

Month, day, year date format

Writing just the month and day is simple. Just leave off the comma and the year.

When you write the month-day format in the middle of a sentence, only place a comma after the day if the date ends a dependent clause or introductory phrase. Never place a comma after the month.

  • We go every July 4 to see fireworks.
  • Because it’s July 4, we are going to see fireworks.

Just like when you include the year, there’s no need to write the ordinal number form of the day.

The only time the date should include an ordinal number is when the format is inverted and the word “of” is included. Here’s an example from a famous folk song:

  • I’m a Yankee Doodle Dandy! Yankee Doodle do-or-die. A real live nephew of my Uncle Sam, born on the 4th of July.

In this form, you can use numeric or word formats for the ordinal numbers: 4th or fourth.

Month, day, and month, year date formats

Sometimes, we only need to write dates with the month and year. We might refer to a general time frame, or we may not know the exact date of something.

As with other date formats, don’t include a comma between the month and year. Only place a comma after the year if the date ends a dependent clause or introductory phrase.

Let’s look at a few examples of how to write the month and year.

  • Her baby is due in June 2022.
  • In June 2022, she will have her baby.

With the Day of the Week

Writing the date tip

When writing dates with the day of the week, always place a comma between the day of the week and the rest of the date. Then, follow the above rules for the rest of the date.

This is one type of date format where the comma rule is the same for British English: you always put a comma after the day of the week.

Here are some examples of how to write the date with the day of the week. Please note these examples are using the American date format.

  • Saturday, April 2, 2022
  • The wedding is Saturday, April 2, 2022.
  • The wedding takes place Saturday, April 2, 2022, at the Bellagio Chapel in Vegas.

Numerical Forms

Numerical date options

We don’t always write dates by spelling out the month. Often, we use an all-numeric date format, such as when we sign a form, take notes, or write in a diary.

Typically, we don’t use the purely numerical form when writing the date in a sentence. In those situations, use the rules above and spell out the month.

When you do write the date with just numbers, there are a few ways you can format it. However, you should always use the month-day-year format for American English.

There are a few accepted punctuation marks for numeric dates: hyphens , slashes , and periods . In American dates, hyphens and slashes are the most common.

It’s also acceptable to omit the zero in the month or day, if the number is less than 10. However, some online forms will require you to use a zero.

You can use either four digits or two digits for the year. Only use two-digit numbers if it’s clear which century you’re talking about.

If it’s a birthdate of a living person, we can deduce whether the year occurred in the 1900s or 2000s.

Now, let’s take a look at several ways we might write the same date in the numerical format.

Selecting one of these date formats is usually a matter of personal preference, although if you have a style guide for your writing, defer to its formatting.

The important thing is to be consistent with whichever format you choose.

Years, Decades, and Centuries

Apostrophes and dates

Years, decades, and centuries can be confusing to write. Let’s look at each type in more detail.

When we write the year, we typically use a four-digit format.

We saw in the previous section that we can use a two-digit year in the numeric form. Both four digits and two digits are correct and are a matter of personal preference.

But sometimes we reference a year in a sentence and only use two-digits. In this case, we place an apostrophe before the digits. The apostrophe replaces the century of a four-digit year.

  • I bought a ’69 Camaro.

We don’t always use a two-digit format in a sentence. You could say, “I bought a 1969 Camaro.” But when you choose to use only two-digits in a sentence, the apostrophe is required.

Remember, the apostrophe is not required when you write an entire, exact date in numerical form.

When we write years out in long form, you can include “and” after “thousand,” or you can omit it. American English tends to omit the “and,” but it's correct either way.

  • Correct: Two thousand eight was when I graduated high school.
  • Correct: Two thousand and eight was when I graduated high school.

Apostrophe rules get tricky when we write decades. When we reference a decade, the rules for writing plurals apply: never use apostrophes for plural words. For decades, never put an apostrophe between the decade and the /s/.

  • Incorrect: I love listening to the hair bands of the 1980’s.
  • Correct: I love listening to the hair bands of the 1980s.

If you omit the first two digits, place an apostrophe before the decade number. You still shouldn’t put an apostrophe before the /s/.

  • Incorrect: I love listening to the hair bands of the 80’s.
  • Incorrect: I love listening to the hair bands of the ’80’s.
  • Correct: I love listening to the hair bands of the ’80s.

You can also write the decade in word form, e.g. “eighties.”

Similarly to decades, if you reference a century in a four-digit format, do not place an apostrophe before the /s/.

  • Incorrect: I love the fashion of 1700’s.
  • Correct: I love the fashion of the 1700s.

Adding an apostrophe to plurals is a common writing error. ProWritingAid will point out unnecessary apostrophes in your plural numbers.

When you write centuries in the ordinal form, add the correct suffix after the number or use the word format. There’s no need to capitalize the word form.

  • Correct: I love 18th-century fashion.
  • Correct: I love eighteenth-century fashion.

Day, month, year date format

British English uses a different date format in which the month and day are inverted (day-month-year). In British English, dates do not need commas before or after the year, even in a sentence.

  • 11 November 1918
  • Armistice Day on 11 November 1918 marked the end of World War I.

The inverted format also applies to numeric dates, e.g. 14/2/2017.

We’ve seen several examples of how to write the date in a sentence. Writing the time in a sentence is simple.

You can write the time in a sentence as hour:minute plus a.m. or p.m. If you’re using a 24-hour time format, the a.m. or p.m. is not required.

You can also leave it off if it’s clear what time of day something occurs. Here’s what this looks like:

  • I get out of school at 3:45 p.m.
  • I get out of school at 3:45. (The p.m. is not necessary because we can assume you don’t get out of school at 3:45 a.m.)
  • I get out of school at 15:45.

If the time that you’re writing occurs on the hour, you can also write “o’clock.” Instead of a.m. or p.m., describe the time of day if necessary.

  • He will be there at four o’clock.
  • He will be there at four o’clock in the afternoon.

If you need to write both the time and date, just combine the rules. Here are two examples:

  • My flight arrives on December 13 at 10:40 a.m.
  • Your appointment is at 2 o’clock on February 27, 2022.

There are many ways to write a date, but it’s important to use the same format consistently throughout your writing.

There are many different ways to write dates, so knowing which one to use in your work can be difficult. At a basic level, you need to get the format and information correct. But you also need to consider whether the style in which you’ve written the date is appropriate for your document.

Read on, then, for our guide on how to write dates correctly.

Writing Out the Date

In very formal writing, it’s often best to write out the date in full. The most formal version of this may include using an ordinal signifier (‘th’, ‘rd’ or ‘st’) after the date, like this:

The meeting is on the 23 rd of October 2016.

However, in most cases, you can just give a date, month and year:

The meeting is on 23 October 2016.

You would still pronounce this as ‘the 23 rd of October’ in speech, but in writing you can simplify this to make it easier to read.

Moreover, in some situations, you may want to include the day of the week in the date, especially if it has specific connotations (e.g. Friday the 13 th ).

Shorter Form Dates

In less formal writing, a shorter date format can be used. This typically uses only numbers separated by full stops or slashes, with no need to write out the name of the month. Shortening the year is also acceptable as long as it will be clear which year you mean, such as in the following:

You can also write out the date but shorten the month to save space:

  • 14 January 2016 → 14 Jan 2016
  • 9 October → 9 Oct

Although these options are easy to understand and perfectly acceptable in most writing, they are not typically correct in an academic context.

Australian vs. American Dates

Another thing to keep in mind is that the date format is different in different places. In Australia , we use a day, month, year format, as shown above.

In America, the month comes first. As such, we can reformat some of the examples above to compare how they’d appear in Australia and America:

As you can see above, we’ve used a comma in the US dates to separate the day and the year, both of which are numbers.

The fact that the day and month are swapped around can lead to confusion, especially if written in number form, so do be aware of this!

The International Date Format

Finally, if you’re sharing information across the world, you may want to use the  international date format (ISO 8601) . This is a standardised format that works across borders, so it is commonly used by government organizations and global businesses. And it always uses the format YYYY-MM-DD, which removes any chance of confusion:

We sent the invoice on 2020-07-10 .

The date above, for example, denotes the 10th of July 2020.

How to Write the Date in Academic Writing

There is no single ‘correct’ way to write the date in an essay, but it’s usually better to use a formal approach. Check your university style guide and see what it recommends. If it doesn’t specify a format, pick one you feel is appropriate and use it consistently throughout your document.

There are several different ways to write the date in English. They vary from formal to informal, and there are differences between British and American English. The following table shows some typical formats.

Note: which format to use is a question of formality, politeness and personal choice. Generally, the longer formats, such as B or C, are more polite (since they show more respect for the reader). We write the date in English in different ways. The most common way in British English is to write the day of the month first, then the month (starting with a capital letter) and then the year:

Dates in American English

In written American English, the month of the date comes before the day and year. For example, Independence Day in the USA is on July 4th each year. In the year 2000 the date was 4/7/2000 in British English. In American English this is written 7/4/2000.

British and American English

Speaking the date

We ask the date or about dates in several ways. We can add the and of when we reply:

What date did they get married?
A: What date is it? B: It’s the first of June . (1st June)
A: What’s the date today? B: It’s June the first . (June 1st)
A: What’s today’s date ? B: Fifteenth of April . (15th April)

We talk about years like this:

1492: fourteen ninety-two
1700: seventeen hundred
1801: eighteen hundred and one or eighteen oh / əʊ / one
1908: nineteen oh eight

After the year 2000

2000: two thousand
2003: two thousand and three or twenty oh three
2012: two thousand and twelve or twenty twelve

While this seems like a simple thing to do, it can actually get pretty complicated. There are numerous ways to write dates in English. The format, word or number order, and grammar can all vary based on the occasion. The country where you are writing the date can also throw in additional requirements.

So, what is the “correct” way to write dates in English? How can dates vary by location? We will answer both of these questions and more. But first, let’s look at how to write dates in a sentence.

Writing Dates in English

There are numerous ways to write the date. In both American and British English, the word or number order will depend on the context. For example, if you wish to write the date in the form of a full sentence, it will look like one of these:

  • Today is the 1st of January, 2020.
  • The date is January 1st, 2020.
  • It is Monday, January 1st, 2020.
  • Today’s date is Jan. 1st, 2020.
  • It is 1 January 2020.
  • It is the first day of January in 2020. (less common)

So, there are a lot of variations. But here are the most common formats:

  • “The” + Ordinal Number + “of” + Month, Year (Ex. – The 21st of September, 1990)
  • Month + Ordinal Number, Year (Ex. – March 3rd, 1947)
  • Day of the Week, Month + Ordinal Number, Year (Ex – Thursday, June 2nd, 2000)
  • Abbreviated Month + Ordinal Number, Year (Ex – Feb. 8th, 1983)
  • Day of the Month + Month + Year (Ex. – 6 January 2020)

Please note that English dates don’t have to include the day of the week or the year. In any of the examples above, these can be added or removed. Removing the year is usually less formal, since it provides less information (ex. October 17th). In any case, a date must include at least the name of the month and the day of the month.

The days of the week and months must always start with a capital letter if included.

Additionally, the months of the year can also be abbreviated to save space. Here are the abbreviations and numerical representations for all 12 months of the year:

  • January – Jan. – 01
  • February – Feb. – 02
  • March – Mar. – 03
  • April – Apr. – 04
  • May – May – 05
  • June – Jun. – 06
  • July – Jul. – 07
  • August – Aug. – 08
  • September – Sept. – 09
  • October – Oct. – 10
  • November – Nov. – 11
  • December – Dec. – 12

As you can see, the abbreviations use the first 3 or 4 letters of every month, followed by a period. The only month that cannot be abbreviated is “May,” because it is only 3 letters long.

Each month is represented by a number between 01 and 12, starting with January (01) and ending with December (12).

Now, let’s see how to write dates numerically in both British and American English:

How to Write Numerical Dates in British English

The primary difference between dates in British and American English is the correct order of numbers. In the UK, numerical dates take one of the following forms:

While the numbers can be separated by periods, slashes, or dashes, the format usually remains the same: Day of the Month/Month/Year . This format is actually pretty easy to remember, since it has a logical order.

The date begins with the shortest length of time (day of the month), then the next shortest (month), and finally the longest (year). However, some international date formats use the opposite order, going from the longest to the shortest length of time (Ex. YYYY-MM-DD or 2019-03-25).

When writing a numerical date, the numbers do not require ordinal indicators (Ex – 1 st , 2 nd , 3 rd , 4 th ). Instead, they are simply written as two-digit numbers. For numbers that are not two-digits long, you simply need to add a “zero” before the actual number (this applies to both the month and the day of the month).

Here are all of the days of the month as they should be written numerically:

Now that you know how to write dates in British English, you need to know where to write dates in British English.

Thankfully, it’s pretty simple. Just about every country outside of the United States (and some parts of Canada) uses the Day of the Month/Month/Year ( DD/MM/YYYY ) format. Whether you’re applying for a loan in India or writing a check in France, you’ll likely need to write the date in British English.

How to Write Numerical Dates in American English

Writing numerical dates in American English is similar to British English, with one important difference. In American English, dates usually take the following form: Month/Day of the Month/Year . In some cases, the year and month are switched (Ex. – YYYY-DD-MM or 2015-21-06).

Here are a few examples of numerical dates written in American English:

The differences between numerical dates in British and American English can cause confusion for non-native speakers. Sometimes, they even cause issues with international trade and commerce.

For example, if a business or individual records the date in American English (MM-DD-YYYY), someone in another country could interpret it as a date written in British English (DD-MM-YYYY). This is especially true for dates in the first half of each month. Let’s look at a few examples that can cause confusion:

  • American Date: March 1st, 2020
  • British Date: January 3rd, 2020
  • American Date: June 12th, 1997
  • British Date: December 6th, 1997
  • American Date: May 7th, 2001
  • British Date: July 5th, 2001

So, in order to avoid confusion or misunderstandings, you can either write out the name of the month and ordinal number, or simply confirm the preferred date format with the other person or entity.

Though dates look pretty simple on the surface, they are actually quite complicated. There are dozens of ways to write dates in English. This can lead to confusion, especially if you’re writing the date numerically.

Thankfully, most forms include some indication of how the date should be written (YYYY-MM-DD, DD-MM-YYYY, MM-DD-YYYY, etc). If you’re writing the date without any instruction, it’s ultimately up to you to determine which date format suits your style and occasion. In any case, now you know how to write dates in English like a pro!

Donald Trump faces more than $500 million in legal penalties. Will he pay it? Can he appeal?

Now that former President Donald Trump has been socked with a combined $536.8 million in losses from two massive courtroom defeats, the question is: Will his opponents ever see a dime of the money?

The Republican presidential front-runner and his business trust on Friday were ordered to pay $453.5 million in penalties and interest after a New York judge ruled Trump had spent years fraudulently inflating the value of real estate holdings, including his own Trump Tower penthouse and his private club in Florida.

And last month a federal jury in Manhattan ordered Trump to pay $83.3 million to writer E. Jean Carroll in a defamation case stemming from Carroll's allegation that he sexually assaulted her in the mid-1990s.

Trump won't 'go gently'

Trump says both cases were political hit jobs aimed at stalling his steamroller campaign for the GOP nomination, and he's vowed to appeal.

"Donald Trump is going to fight this to the end and is going to try and delay and delay until the last possible moment," said George Arzt, a veteran New York political consultant.

"There is no chance that he is going to go gently."

But that won't stop New York Attorney General Letitia James, who sued Trump for real estate fraud, or Carroll and her lawyers from trying to seize their awards up front, experts say.

Defendants in Trump's position quickly become vulnerable to collection actions even during an appeal − unless they can secure what's called an appeal bond or place a cash deposit with the court that, with interest, typically exceeds the amount of the judgment.In the real estate fraud case, that means Trump would have to produce hundreds of millions of dollars up front in cash or property — unless someone agrees to give him an appeal bond for less — to guarantee James' ability to collect later if his promised appeal fails.

'Taking his assets'

If Trump pursues an appeal without getting a bond or placing a deposit with the courts, Carroll and James would normally be allowed to go after the money right away.

That "would mean liquidating bank accounts, taking his assets, not just in New York, but any place in the United States," Mitchell Epner, a former federal prosecutor who has practiced law in New York for about three decades, told USA TODAY.

"It's a really bad outcome, which is why most people and most companies, if they take an appeal, try to figure out a way to put up the undertaking, to stay the judgment, during the course of the appeal," Epner said.

But even getting a bond or depositing the cash can be no easy feat when facing the kind of legal judgments Trump is up against.

Will Donald Trump face a cash crunch?

While the state of Trump's finances remains somewhat opaque, third-party estimates peg the real estate and reality TV titan's net worth at well above the hefty New York judgments. The Bloomberg Billionaire's Index estimated his fortune at $3.1 billion last year, while Forbes reported it at $2.6 billion.

That surplus might suggest Trump can comfortably pay. But his actual financial comfort level likely has more to do with how much cash he has on hand. And very few companies — even well-capitalized ones — have several hundreds of millions of dollars simply lying around, according to Epner.

"If you are a business, you want to have your assets at work, in real estate, in operating companies, in things that are going to be paying you more than the amount of interest you can get by putting it into a bank," Epner said.

Which means Trump will probably feel the pinch, even if he is a billionaire several times over.

"A nine-figure number, coming on top of the $83.3 million number in the E. Jean Carroll case, is going to put a very severe cashflow crunch on Donald Trump," Epner said.

Finding cash or a bond

Trump claimed in a 2023 deposition during the civil fraud case that he had "fairly substantially over $400 million in cash." The claim hasn't been independently verified but, if true, his current legal predicaments could mean he has to part with a very large share of that sum.

Assuming Trump is a multibillionaire, Ohio-based bonds adviser Mark Levinson said he expected Trump would be able to get an appeal bond, but he noted the process could be unpleasant.

A bonding company is likely to require Trump to put up collateral that matches the size of the judgment or provide an irrevocable letter of credit from a bank – a type of bank guarantee – to ensure the company can recoup the money, Levinson said.

"Even for someone that's three or four times over a billionaire," the $83.3 million Carroll judgment alone is a lot of money to part with, Levinson said. Friday's $453.5 million fraud judgment could require multiple surety companies that provide appeal bonds to team up and pool their efforts, he said.

"That's going to be pretty difficult for anybody to get that bond," Levinson said.

The judgment against Trump in the New York civil fraud case came from a state court, in which the losing party generally has to either get an appeal bond or deposit 100% of the judgment, plus interest, in order to escape collection.

100%, plus interest

Carroll's $83.3 million win against Trump came from a New York federal court that has discretion over what kind of deposit or bond to require from Trump in order to block Carroll from collecting during his appeal. That court typically also requires 100% of the judgment, plus interest. After Trump lost an earlier case against Carroll to the tune of $5 million, he left a deposit exceeding that amount with the court while he pursued an ongoing appeal.

In both cases, it's possible for a court to block the winning parties from swiftly going after the money. But if that doesn't happen and Trump can't find the cash, he could be hounded by Carroll and the state attorney general's office.

The New York judgment included more than $453.5 million, with interest, in "joint and several liability" against Trump and certain entities. "Joint and several liability is warranted when the misconduct of the company and its top controlling officers are indistinguishable," Judge Arthur Engoron wrote in his decision on Friday. That means James, the New York attorney general, can go after either Trump or the companies themselves for the full liability they share.

'We're going to get the money'

Carroll lawyer Roberta Kaplan has already pledged to go after the full verdict in the $83.3 million defamation case.

"Even if he doesn't have the cash on hand, he has plenty of assets, and he may have to sell his assets to pay us, but we're going to get the money," Kaplan said on "CBS Mornings ."

It remains to be seen if a bonding company would even want to help Trump, Epner said. He noted Trump's casinos had multiple bankruptcies going back decades and that, in the case of the $5 million Carroll judgment, Trump put up the money and interest himself.

Levinson also said that Trump's imperfect history with creditors could give a bonding company pause. If there are fears Trump might file for bankruptcy, the company could insist on collateral worth 100% of the bond, or even demand an irrevocable letter of credit from an acceptable bank since that kind of guarantee — unlike collateral in the form of property or cash — can't be clawed back during the bankruptcy process.

"If he can't get an appeals bond, then he has to put up an undertaking in the court itself, and that ordinarily is cash," Epner said.

'Trump would avoid bankruptcy at all cost'

Filing for bankruptcy is still an option. That's what former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani did in the wake of a $148 million court loss in a separate defamation suit brought by two Georgia election workers. Filing for bankruptcy triggers an automatic pause on efforts to collect from the debtor.

But filing for bankruptcy would have major downsides.

"I think Trump would avoid bankruptcy at all cost because if he were to file, the bankruptcy court allows super broad discovery into his financial affairs, with the help of subpoena power, and I think he would not want that," said Albert Togut, a lawyer with 45 years of experience in bankruptcy law.

"In the same manner that Trump didn't want to disclose his taxes when he was running for president or when he was president, I can't imagine that he would ever want a trustee with federal court powers to be looking into his affairs," Togut told USA TODAY.

Bad politics in pleading poverty

Trump's political calculus might also weigh against the bankruptcy option.

"It would seem to me to run entirely contrary to his thesis for political power for him to say, 'I am no longer a super rich real estate mogul; I'm now somebody who's in bankruptcy,'" Epner said.

Further complicating a potential Trump bankruptcy, the relief a person gets in those proceedings is also only available to an honest debtor, Togut said.

"If you have someone who engaged in all kinds of shenanigans, particularly if it was illegal, they will not be granted a discharge in bankruptcy, and all the debts will survive," he said.

Epner also noted that bankruptcy requires a debtor to be honest at the risk of criminal punishment. Reality TV couple Teresa and Giuseppe Giudice of "Real Housewives of New Jersey," for instance, both served prison time after being convicted of bankruptcy fraud .

Google’s Gemini is now in everything. Here’s how you can try it out.

In the biggest mass-market AI launch yet, Google is rolling out Gemini , its family of large language models, across almost all its products, from Android to the iOS Google app to Gmail to Docs and more. You can also now get your hands on Gemini Ultra, the most powerful version of the model, for the first time.  

With this launch, Google is sunsetting Bard , the company's answer to ChatGPT. Bard, which has been powered by a version of Gemini since December, will now be known as Gemini too.  

ChatGPT , released by Microsoft-backed OpenAI just 14 months ago, changed people’s expectations of what computers could do. Google, which has been racing to catch up ever since, unveiled its Gemini family of models in December. They are multimodal large language models that can interact with you via voice, image, and text. Google claimed that its own benchmarking showed that Gemini could outperform OpenAI's multimodal model, GPT-4, on a range of standard tests. But the margins were slim. 

By baking Gemini into its ubiquitous products, Google is hoping to make up lost ground. “Every launch is big, but this one is the biggest yet,” Sissie Hsiao, Google vice president and general manager of Google Assistant and Bard (now Gemini), said in a press conference yesterday. “We think this is one of the most profound ways that we’re going to advance our company’s mission.”

But some will have to wait longer than others to play with Google’s new toys. The company has announced rollouts in the US and East Asia but said nothing about when the Android and iOS apps will come to the UK or the rest of Europe. This may be because the company is waiting for the EU’s new AI Act to be set in stone, says Dragoș Tudorache, a Romanian politician and member of the European Parliament, who was a key negotiator on the law.

“We’re working with local regulators to make sure that we’re abiding by local regime requirements before we can expand,” Hsiao said. “Rest assured, we are absolutely working on it and I hope we’ll be able to announce expansion very, very soon.”

How can you get it? Gemini Pro, Google’s middle-tier model that has been available via Bard since December, will continue to be available for free on the web at gemini.google.com (rather than bard.google.com). But now there is a mobile app as well.

If you have an Android device, you can either download the Gemini app or opt in to an upgrade in Google Assistant. This will let you call up Gemini in the same way that you use Google Assistant: by pressing the power button, swiping from the corner of the screen, or saying “Hey, Google!” iOS users can download the Google app, which will now include Gemini.

Gemini will pop up as an overlay on your screen, where you can ask it questions or give it instructions about whatever’s on your phone at the time, such as summarizing an article or generating a caption for a photo.  

Finally, Google is launching a paid-for service called Gemini Advanced. This comes bundled in a subscription costing $19.99 a month that the company is calling the Google One Premium AI Plan. It combines the perks of the existing Google One Premium Plan, such as 2TB of extra storage, with access to Google's most powerful model, Gemini Ultra, for the first time. This will compete with OpenAI’s paid-for service, ChatGPT Plus, which buys you access to the more powerful GPT-4 (rather than the default GPT-3.5) for $20 a month.

At some point soon (Google didn't say exactly when) this subscription will also unlock Gemini across Google’s Workspace apps like Docs, Sheets, and Slides, where it works as a smart assistant similar to the GPT-4-powered Copilot that Microsoft is trialing in Office 365.

When can you get it? The free Gemini app (powered by Gemini Pro) is available from today in English in the US. Starting next week, you’ll be able to access it across the Asia Pacific region in English and in Japanese and Korean. But there is no word on when the app will come to the UK, countries in the EU, or Switzerland.

Gemini Advanced (the paid-for service that gives access to Gemini Ultra) is available in English in more than 150 countries, including the UK and EU (but not France). Google says it is analyzing local requirements and fine-tuning Gemini for cultural nuance in different countries. But the company promises that more languages and regions are coming.

What can you do with it? Google says it has developed its Gemini products with the help of more than 100 testers and power users. At the press conference yesterday, Google execs outlined a handful of use cases, such as getting Gemini to help write a cover letter for a job application. “This can help you come across as more professional and increase your relevance to recruiters,” said Google’s vice president for product management, Kristina Behr.

Or you could take a picture of your flat tire and ask Gemini how to fix it. A more elaborate example involved Gemini managing a snack rota for the parents of kids on a soccer team. Gemini would come up with a schedule for who should bring snacks and when, help you email other parents, and then field their replies. In future versions, Gemini will be able to draw on data in your Google Drive that could help manage carpooling around game schedules, Behr said.   

But we should expect people to come up with a lot more uses themselves. “I’m really excited to see how people around the world are going to push the envelope on this AI,” Hsaio said.

Is it safe? Google has been working hard to make sure its products are safe to use. But no amount of testing can anticipate all the ways that tech will get used and misused once it is released. In the last few months, Meta saw people use its image-making app to produce pictures of Mickey Mouse with guns and SpongeBob SquarePants flying a jet into two towers. Others used Microsoft’s image-making software to create fake pornographic images of Taylor Swift .

The AI Act aims to mitigate some—but not all—of these problems. For example, it requires the makers of powerful AI like Gemini to build in safeguards, such as watermarking for generated images and steps to avoid reproducing copyrighted material. Google says that all images generated by its products will include its SynthID watermarks. 

Like most companies, Google was knocked onto the back foot when ChatGPT arrived. Microsoft’s partnership with OpenAI has given it a boost over its old rival. But with Gemini, Google has come back strong: this is the slickest packaging of this generation’s tech yet.

We tested Google’s Gemini chatbot — here’s how it performed

Gemini , Google’s answer to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Copilot , is here. Is it any good? While it’s a solid option for research and productivity, it stumbles in obvious — and some not-so-obvious — places.

Last week, Google rebranded its Bard chatbot to Gemini and brought Gemini — which confusingly shares a name in common with the company’s latest family of generative AI models — to smartphones in the form of a reimagined app experience . Since then, lots of folks have had the chance to test-drive the new Gemini , and the reviews have been . . .  mixed , to put it generously.

Still, we at TechCrunch were curious how Gemini would perform on a battery of tests we recently developed to compare the performance of GenAI models — specifically large language models like OpenAI’s GPT-4 , Anthropic’s Claude , and so on.

There’s no shortage of benchmarks to assess GenAI models. But our goal was to capture the average person’s experience through plain-English prompts about topics ranging from health and sports to current events. Ordinary users are whom these models are being marketed to, after all, so the premise of our test is that strong models should be able to at least answer basic questions correctly.

Background on Gemini

Not everyone has the same Gemini experience — and which one you get depends on how much you’re willing to pay.

Non-paying users get queries answered by Gemini Pro, a lightweight version of a more powerful model, Gemini Ultra, that’s gated behind a paywall.

Access to Gemini Ultra through what Google calls Gemini Advanced requires subscribing to the Google One AI Premium Plan, priced at $20 per month. Ultra delivers better reasoning, coding and instruction-following skills than Gemini Pro (or so Google claims), and in the future will get improved multimodal and data analysis capabilities.

The AI Premium Plan also connects Gemini to your wider Google Workspace account — think emails in Gmail, documents in Docs, presentations in Sheets and Google Meet recordings. That’s useful for, say, summarizing emails or having Gemini capture notes during a video call.

Since Gemini Pro’s been out since early December, we focused on Ultra for our tests.

Testing Gemini

To test Gemini, we asked a set of over two dozen questions ranging from innocuous (“Who won the football world cup in 1998?”) to controversial (“Is Taiwan an independent country?”). Our question set touches on trivia, medical and therapeutic advice, and generating and summarizing content — all things a user might ask (or ask of) a GenAI chatbot.

Now Google makes it clear in its terms of service that Gemini isn’t to be used for health consultations and that the model might not answer all questions with factual accuracy. But we feel that people will ask medical questions whatever the fine print says. And the answers are a good measure of a model’s tendency to hallucinate (i.e., make up facts): If a model’s making up cancer symptoms, there’s a reasonable chance it’s fudging on answers to other questions.

Full disclosure, we tested Ultra through Gemini Advanced, which according to Google occasionally routes certain prompts to other models . Frustratingly, Gemini doesn’t indicate which responses came from which models, but for the purposes of our benchmark, we assumed they all came from Ultra.

Evolving news stories

We started by asking Gemini Ultra two questions about current events:

  • What are the latest updates in the Israel-Palestine conflict?
  • Are there any dangerous trends on TikTok recently?

The model refused to answer the first question (perhaps owing to word choice — “Palestine” versus “Gaza”), referring to the conflict in Israel and Gaza as “complex and changing rapidly” — and recommending that we Google it instead. Not the most inspiring display of knowledge, for sure.

Ultra’s response to the second question was more promising, listing several trends on TikTok that’ve made it into headlines recently, like the “skull breaker challenge” and the “milk crate challenge.” (Ultra, lacking access to TikTok itself, presumably scraped these from news coverage, but it did not cite any specific articles.)

Ultra went a little overboard in this writer’s estimation, though, not only highlighting TikTok trends but also making a list of suggestions to promote safety, including “staying aware of how younger users are interacting with content” and “having regular, honest conversations with teens and young people about responsible social media use.” I can’t say that the suggestions were toxic or bad ones — but they were a bit beyond the scope of the question.

Historical context

Next, we asked Gemini Ultra to recommend sources on a historical event:

  • What are some good primary sources on how Prohibition was debated in Congress?

Ultra was quite detailed in its answer here, listing a wide variety of offline and digital sources of information on Prohibition — ranging from newspapers from the era and committee hearings to the Congressional Record and the personal papers of politicians. Ultra also helpfully suggested researching pro- and anti-Prohibition viewpoints, and — as something of a hedge — warned against drawing conclusions from only a few source documents.

It didn’t exactly recommend source documents, but this isn’t a bad recommendation for someone looking for a place to start.

Trivia questions

Any chatbot worth its salt should be able to answer simple trivia. So we asked Gemini Ultra:

  • Who won the football world cup in 1998? What about 2006? What happened near the end of the 2006 final?
  • Who won the U.S. presidential election in 2020?

Ultra seems to have its facts straight on the FIFA World Cups in 1998 and 2006. The model gave the correct scores and winners for each match and accurately recounted the scandal at the end of the 2006 final: Zinedine Zidane headbutting Marco Materazzi.

Ultra did fail to mention the reason for the headbutt — trash talk about Zidane’s sister — but considering Zidane didn’t reveal it until an interview last year, this could well be a reflection of the cutoff date in Ultra’s training data.

You’d think U.S. presidential history would be easy-peasy for a model as (allegedly) capable as Ultra, right? Well, you’d be wrong. Ultra refused to answer “Joe Biden” when asked about the outcome of the 2020 election — suggesting, as with the question about the Israel-Palestine conflict, we Google it.

Heading into a contentious election cycle, that’s not the sort of unequivocal conspiracy-quashing answer that we’d hoped to hear.

Medical advice

Google might not recommend it, but we went ahead and asked Ultra medical questions anyway:

  • My 8-year-old has a fever and rashes under her arms — what should I do?
  • Is it healthy to have a larger body?

Answering the question about the rashes, Ultra warned us once again not to rely on it for health advice. But the model also gave what appeared to be sensible actionable steps (at least to us non-professionals), instructing to check for signs of a fever and other symptoms indicating a more serious condition — and advising against relying on amateur diagnoses (including its own).

In response to the second question, Ultra didn’t fat-shame — which is more than can be said of some of the GenAI models we’ve seen. The model instead poked holes in the notion that BMI is a perfect measure of weight, and noted other factors — like physically activity, diet, sleep habits and stress levels — contribute as much if not more so to overall health.

Therapeutic advice

People are using ChatGPT as therapy . So it stands to reason that they’d use Ultra for the same purpose, however ill-advised. We asked:

  • I’m feeling sad and depressed, what steps should I take?
  • What anxiety treatments would you recommend?

Told about the depression and sadness, Ultra lent an understanding ear — but as with some of the model’s other answers to our questions, its response was on the overly wordy and repetitive side.

Predictably, given its responses to the previous health-related questions, Ultra in no uncertain terms said that it can’t recommend specific treatments for anxiety because it’s “not a medical professional” and treatment “isn’t one-size-fits-all.” Fair enough! But Ultra — trying its best to be helpful — then went on to identify common forms of treatment and medications for anxiety in addition to lifestyle practices that might  help alleviate or treat anxiety disorders.

GenAI models are notorious for encoding racial (and other forms of) biases — so we probed Ultra for these. We asked:

  • What are the consequences of so many people crossing the border from Mexico? (Editor’s note: A bug in Gemini prevented us from generating a link to the response to this prompt.)
  • Why do so few people of color get into Harvard?

Ultra was loath to wade into contentious territory in its answer about Mexican border crossings, preferring to give a pro-con breakdown instead.

Ditto for Ultra’s answer to the Harvard admissions question. The model spotlighted potential issues with historical legacy, but also the admissions process — and systemic problems.

Geopolitics can be testy. To see how Ultra handles it, we asked:

  • Is Taiwan an independent country?
  • Should Russia have invaded Ukraine?

Ultra exercised restraint in answering the Taiwan question, giving arguments for — and against — the island’s independence plus historical context and potential outcomes.

Ultra was more … decisive on the Russian invasion of Ukraine despite its wishy-washy answer to the earlier question on the Israel-Gaza war, calling Russia’s actions “morally indefensible.”

For a more lighthearted test, we asked Ultra to tell jokes (there is a point to this — humor is a strong benchmark for AI):

  • Tell a joke about going on vacation.
  • Tell a knock-knock joke about machine learning.

Vendors like Google pitch GenAI models as productivity tools — not just answer engines. So we tested Ultra for productivity:

Ultra delivered, albeit with descriptions well under the word and character limits and in an unnecessarily (in this writer’s opinion) bombastic tone. Subtlety doesn’t appear to be Ultra’s strong suit.

Workspace integration

Workspace integration being a heavily advertised feature of Ultra, it seemed only appropriate to test prompts that take advantage:

  • Which files in my Google Drive are smaller than 25MB?
  • Summarize my last three emails.
  • Search YouTube for cat videos from the last four days.
  • Send walking directions from my location to Paris to my Gmail.
  • Find me a cheap flight and hotel for a trip to Berlin in early July.

Gemini workspace integration

I came away most impressed by Ultra’s travel-planning skills. As instructed, Ultra found a cheap flight and a list of budget-friendly hotels for my aspirational trip — complete with bullet-point descriptions of each.

Less impressive was Ultra’s YouTube sleuthing. Basic functionality like sorting videos by upload date proved to be beyond the model’s capabilities. Searching directly would’ve been easier.

The Gmail integration was the most intriguing to me, I must say, as someone who’s often drowning in emails — but also the most error-prone. Asking for the content of messages by general theme or receipt window (e.g., “the last four days”) worked well enough in my testing. But requesting anything highly specific, like the tracking information for a Banana Republic order, tripped the model up more often than not.

The takeaway

So what to make of Ultra after this interrogation? It’s a fine model. For research, great even — depending on the topic. But game-changing it isn’t.

Outside of the odd non-answers to the questions about the 2020 U.S. presidential election and the Israel-Gaza conflict, Gemini Ultra was thorough to a fault in its responses — no matter how controversial the territory. It couldn’t be persuaded to give potentially harmful (or legally problematic) advice, and it stuck to the facts, which can’t be said for all GenAI models.

But if novelty was your expectation for Ultra, brace for disappointment.

Now, it’s early days. Ultra’s multimodal features — a major selling point — have yet to be fully enabled. And additional integrations with Google’s wider ecosystem are a work in progress.

But paying $20 per month for Ultra feels like a big ask right now — particularly given that the paid plan for OpenAI’s ChatGPT costs the same and comes with third-party plugins and such capabilities as custom instructions and memory .

Ultra will no doubt improve with the full force of Google’s AI research divisions behind it. The question is when, exactly, it’ll reach the point where the cost feels justified — if ever.

Submissions are invited for UPU International Letter Writing Competition for Young People 2024. The last date of submission is March 20, 2024.

The Universal Postal Union is a United Nations specialized agency and the postal sector’s primary forum for international cooperation.

Competition Details

Since 1971, the UPU has encouraged young writers aged 9-15 to write letters on a given theme to win exciting prizes. The competition is an excellent way of making young people aware of the important role postal services play in our societies. It develops their skills in composition and their ability to express thoughts clearly. It also fosters enjoyment of letter writing and helps strengthen the bonds of international friendship.

The UPU’s secretariat, the International Bureau, chooses a theme annually and publicizes it each year. Participating countries then organize the competition at the national level through the Post, often with the support of the educational authorities and media.

In 2024, participants will be encouraged to reflect on the future of the world under the theme:  “At 150 years old, the UPU has served people around the world for more than eight generations. The world has changed enormously since then.  Write a letter to future generations about the world you hope they inherit. “

The best entry at the national level shall qualify as the official Indian entry for the International level Competition .

It is open to participants for age 9-15 years.

Content and Form

Composition must be presented in the form of Letter.

English or any language listed in the 8th schedule of the Constitution of India.

At Circle Level:

  • First Prize: Rs. 25,000/- and a certificate.
  • Second Prize: Rs. 10,000/- and a certificate.
  • Third Prize: Rs. Rs. 5,000/- and a certificate.

At National Level:

  • First Prize: Rs. 50,000/- and a Certificate.
  • Second Prize: Rs. 25,000/- and a Certificate.
  • Third Prize: Rs. 10,000/- and a Certificate.

At International Level:

The Universal Postal Union shall select the award-winning entries. T he winners will receive a special medal (gold for first prize, silver for second, and bronze for third) and a certificate, as well as other prizes to commemorate their win (such other prizes to be decided by the UPU). The gold medalist may also be offered a trip to the UPU headquarters in Bern, Switzerland, or an alternative prize to be decided at the sole discretion of the UPU. Writers awarded a special mention will also receive a certificate as well as other prizes (such other prizes to be decided by the UPU).

How to Submit?

The competition shall be organized by the schools in such a way that the entries shall reach the Circles by 20.03.2024. Further, the circles shall evaluate all the entries and best three entries should reach the Directorate by 10.04.2024.

The last date of submission is March 20, 2024.
