Deciding on the topic for your writing piece can be challenging. Students often find themselves with writer’s block and cannot think of creative ideas for their essays.

  • Brainstorm ideas and make a list -  Brainstorming is a great way to come up with a topic. Make a list of all the ideas that interest you and your audience. At this point, you do not have to gather only good ideas.
  • Evaluate the topic -  After preparing a list of ideas, analyze which topic is appropriate. For writing an expository essay, make sure that the topic you choose can be explained in detail.
  • Narrow down the topic’s focus -  Once you have chosen a topic, focus on specific aspects. Broad topics will make it difficult for the writer to explain and support the argument.

Also, keep in mind to follow a defined structure for the content. Moreover, the traditional essay outline of an introduction, body, and conclusion should be included in the document.

The introduction paragraph should be well written and provides a defined thesis statement. Then comes the body paragraphs that present all the explanations and descriptions of the topic. However, make sure to keep the body of your essay informative and organized.

Conclude your essay with strong closing lines to leave a lasting impression on the readers.

How to Write an Expository Essay | Structure, Tips & Examples

Published on July 14, 2020 by Jack Caulfield . Revised on July 23, 2023.

“Expository” means “intended to explain or describe something.” An expository essay provides a clear, focused explanation of a particular topic, process, or set of ideas. It doesn’t set out to prove a point, just to give a balanced view of its subject matter.

Expository essays are usually short assignments intended to test your composition skills or your understanding of a subject. They tend to involve less research and original arguments than argumentative essays .

When should you write an expository essay, how to approach an expository essay, introducing your essay, writing the body paragraphs, concluding your essay, other interesting articles, frequently asked questions about expository essays.

In school and university, you might have to write expository essays as in-class exercises, exam questions, or coursework assignments.

Sometimes it won’t be directly stated that the assignment is an expository essay, but there are certain keywords that imply expository writing is required. Consider the prompts below.

The word “explain” here is the clue: An essay responding to this prompt should provide an explanation of this historical process—not necessarily an original argument about it.

Sometimes you’ll be asked to define a particular term or concept. This means more than just copying down the dictionary definition; you’ll be expected to explore different ideas surrounding the term, as this prompt emphasizes.

An expository essay should take an objective approach: It isn’t about your personal opinions or experiences. Instead, your goal is to provide an informative and balanced explanation of your topic. Avoid using the first or second person (“I” or “you”).

The structure of your expository essay will vary according to the scope of your assignment and the demands of your topic. It’s worthwhile to plan out your structure before you start, using an essay outline .

A common structure for a short expository essay consists of five paragraphs: An introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

Like all essays, an expository essay begins with an introduction . This serves to hook the reader’s interest, briefly introduce your topic, and provide a thesis statement summarizing what you’re going to say about it.

Hover over different parts of the example below to see how a typical introduction works.

In many ways, the invention of the printing press marked the end of the Middle Ages. The medieval period in Europe is often remembered as a time of intellectual and political stagnation. Prior to the Renaissance, the average person had very limited access to books and was unlikely to be literate. The invention of the printing press in the 15th century allowed for much less restricted circulation of information in Europe, paving the way for the Reformation.

The body of your essay is where you cover your topic in depth. It often consists of three paragraphs, but may be more for a longer essay. This is where you present the details of the process, idea or topic you’re explaining.

It’s important to make sure each paragraph covers its own clearly defined topic, introduced with a topic sentence . Different topics (all related to the overall subject matter of the essay) should be presented in a logical order, with clear transitions between paragraphs.

Hover over different parts of the example paragraph below to see how a body paragraph is constructed.

The invention of the printing press in 1440 changed this situation dramatically. Johannes Gutenberg, who had worked as a goldsmith, used his knowledge of metals in the design of the press. He made his type from an alloy of lead, tin, and antimony, whose durability allowed for the reliable production of high-quality books. This new technology allowed texts to be reproduced and disseminated on a much larger scale than was previously possible. The Gutenberg Bible appeared in the 1450s, and a large number of printing presses sprang up across the continent in the following decades. Gutenberg’s invention rapidly transformed cultural production in Europe; among other things, it would lead to the Protestant Reformation.

The conclusion of an expository essay serves to summarize the topic under discussion. It should not present any new information or evidence, but should instead focus on reinforcing the points made so far. Essentially, your conclusion is there to round off the essay in an engaging way.

Hover over different parts of the example below to see how a conclusion works.

The invention of the printing press was important not only in terms of its immediate cultural and economic effects, but also in terms of its major impact on politics and religion across Europe. In the century following the invention of the printing press, the relatively stationary intellectual atmosphere of the Middle Ages gave way to the social upheavals of the Reformation and the Renaissance. A single technological innovation had contributed to the total reshaping of the continent.

An expository essay is a broad form that varies in length according to the scope of the assignment.

Expository essays are often assigned as a writing exercise or as part of an exam, in which case a five-paragraph essay of around 800 words may be appropriate.

You’ll usually be given guidelines regarding length; if you’re not sure, ask.

An expository essay is a common assignment in high-school and university composition classes. It might be assigned as coursework, in class, or as part of an exam.

Sometimes you might not be told explicitly to write an expository essay. Look out for prompts containing keywords like “explain” and “define.” An expository essay is usually the right response to these prompts.

An argumentative essay tends to be a longer essay involving independent research, and aims to make an original argument about a topic. Its thesis statement makes a contentious claim that must be supported in an objective, evidence-based way.

An expository essay also aims to be objective, but it doesn’t have to make an original argument. Rather, it aims to explain something (e.g., a process or idea) in a clear, concise way. Expository essays are often shorter assignments and rely less on research.

110 Great and Easy Expository Essay Topics

Are you looking for expository essay topics? If so, you are likely a student who just got a writing assignment from your teacher and who’s hoping to make sense of instructions. It’s not a problem, we are going to do everything in our power to help you. First, let’s find out  what is an expository paper ? It entails a piece of writing focused on exploring and explaining some idea, as well as on building an argument about it. In short, you should strive to prove a specific point of view by investigating and analyzing an idea, sharing results with your readers. This type of writing combines several others at once, and in many ways, it makes your job easier because you’ve likely already had some experience with them.

But how to pick an expository essay topic? In general, such tasks are important because they sharpen your critical thinking and help learn how to analyze something from a deeper angle than you might be used to. Topic plays an extremely important role here as it determines how interesting your research is going to be for you and your readers both. We’ll help you choose correctly based on your personal interests.

Tips for Settling On the Best Expository Writing Topics

High school, college, and university often give their students a choice between topics. Some professors insist on you selecting it from their list, but in most cases, you’ll be given a free reign. That’s where you have to be careful because a wrong choice could turn essay writing into torment and result in a bad grade. For avoiding this situation, follow these tips.

  • Turn choosing into game.  You must know that personal interest is vital as you’re picking ideas for expository essays. Before you start looking for titles, think about yourself. Are there things you wouldn’t mind exploring? Perhaps you could turn favorite hobby into your essay subject. Books, movies, historical events — anything would do. In case you still cannot decide, play a game. Choose a place, go there, give yourself an hour, and observe everything you’re seeing. Birds, passing people and animals, monuments you can catch a glimpse of, excerpts from TV programs you can hear — consider everything, and by the end of the hour, settle on an object, even if it has to be the first thing you see. This is a funny way of deciding what to write about.
  • Brainstorm some more.  When having some rough examples of expository essay topics in mind, start brainstorming. You could do it by yourself or discuss it with friends and family. Break an idea into parts: expand on each one, twist them and turn them until something solid emerges. Maybe you could even talk with classmates about it since they also have the same task — common efforts help with individual solutions!
  • Pick sources in advance.  You will need to find sources before deciding on expository essay topics for college. Pick only credible ones: they should be relatively new and peer-reviewed. Read through them at least partly. Do they support the point you’ve chosen? If they contradict it, maybe you’ll need to re-think your strategy. Or perhaps you’ll see a totally new angle to explore — that’s why sources should be selected as soon as possible.
  • Try writing a rough outline.  When you think there is a topic ready, make a quick outline about the points it’ll have. If your ideas end before the word count, then you should select another subject. Such simple test will show whether you’re prepared for writing a whole essay on topic you liked.

How to Write an Expository Essay

Even though you now know a lot about the expository essay format, there are other things to keep in mind as well. In this section, we'll go over the specific steps you should take when figuring out how to write an expository essay.

Brainstorming Ideas

The absolute first thing you should do when given an expository essay assignment is to carefully go over the guidelines. Make sure you completely understand what is required of you. If it is for class, you may be limited to certain topics and word counts, there may be restrictions on the quality of sources you can use, etc. You might write an incredible essay but get a low grade because you missed out on some small restriction or guideline.

Once you know exactly what you are supposed to do, it's time to think about different concepts you would like to explain. Make sure you are aware of the different types of expository essays so that when you brainstorm topics you have a tentative idea of what type of expository essay would be best suited for that topic.

Think about what has been covered in class, what the teacher might expect, and what you find interesting to try and come up with a list of topics. Do a little bit of research on each topic to figure out whether you can easily find reputable sources and to gain a further understanding of the topic. After keeping all these things in mind, you should end up with an expository essay topic that is appropriate, engaging, and high-scoring.

Fill Up an Outline

Once you have zeroed in on a topic it's time to do research. One of the best ways to plan your writing is to use an expository essay outline to organize interesting information. While conducting research focus on the body paragraphs rather than on the introduction or conclusion. Think about three main ways you can explain the topic and put information that fits into those subtopics under the appropriate body paragraphs.

While conducting research and filling out an outline, think about potential thesis statements. Coming up with a thesis statement too early will restrict your research, so it is better to develop a thesis statement as you find out more and more information. That being said, by the end of the planning stage you should have a finalized thesis statement

Planning out your essay beforehand will give direction to your research, cut down on the amount of time you spend on the assignment, improve the overall flow of the final essay, and make the actual writing process much easier.

Write the First Draft

Now is the time to translate your outline into full sentences. It is often useful to leave the writing of the introduction till the end because after writing the body paragraphs you will have a better idea of what to say in an introduction, but make sure that you write down your thesis statement.

Use the information you have found to create a cohesive analysis of the topic in each body paragraph. Make sure that the information you present is on topic and connects to the other facts around it. Think about what the purpose of each body paragraph is and question whether the information you are presenting fits that purpose or not. Make sure to use transition words within the paragraph and use transition sentences between paragraphs to improve overall comprehensibility and flow.

Finalize Your Draft

Go over the first draft of the essay and focus on whether the different paragraphs make sense or not. Don't be afraid to reorganize sections or completely get rid of some pieces of information. As you write your draft, new ways of expressing the information can come to mind that will make the overall essay more powerful.

Make sure that you are not trying to make a persuasive argument and that you are using facts rather than opinions as evidence.

Go over each sentence to make sure that it is clear and that it fits the purpose of the paragraph it is in. Look at the information you have included and make sure that it is useful and enhances understanding of the topic. It is better to have less information than more if the information is distracting or does not add anything to the essay.

Try and read the paper as if it is the first time you are coming across the topic to see if it makes sense or not. Congratulations, you are just one step away from being able to submit an expository essay!

Editing and Proofreading

Go over the final draft of your essay and check for formatting errors, grammatical errors, spelling mistakes, etc and make sure that it complies with all the guidelines of the assignment. Finally, ask a friend or relative to go over the paper to do the last check. If you feel like you still need to make a lot of changes, don't be disheartened, spend the extra time to make the changes or reach out to expository essay writing service .

Expository Essay Examples

One of the best ways to learn how to write an expository essay is to look at an expository essay example. Looking at expository essay examples can give you a deeper understanding of what is expected as well as how to write an essay that flows well. Make sure that you use any examples you find as inspiration rather than a place to directly source information or text!

Researchers have developed the foundational differences between these two approaches that have helped establish the pros and cons of each. Each approach has advantages and drawbacks. There have been debates on which approach is cheaper in terms of time and cost of treatment. Also, there is ongoing concern on which approach is safer than the other.
As of 2019, there were over 3.5 billion social media users globally, and this figure still increases by 9% each year. It is impossible to deny that social media has become an important part of many people’s lives. There are various positive effects linked with the platforms, including better connectivity. However, addiction to social media platforms, the increased comparisons between individuals, and the fear of missing out have increased depression and sadness. Social media addiction has become rampant, which has negatively influenced the lives of many individuals in society. Checking and scrolling through the different social media platforms has become increasingly popular over time, leading to excessive and compulsive use.

expository essay topics

What is an expository essay? An expository essay is one of the four major types of writing assignments and requires students to teach or explain information in an objective way. To achieve this, students should write in the third person and inform, compare and contrast, or show cause and effect. Ample evidence and examples must be attained and the student must present the information in an orderly and effective manner. Did we define expository essay adequately? Keep reading to learn five simple steps to help guide you through the writing process. We’ve also included a list of 100 essay topics to help you get started.

An expository text is a type of writing that brings some idea to the surface, making it clear and easy to understand. This genre of an essay makes a student explicate something using such tools as survey and analysis, drawing the evidence and arguments. It provides readers with specific and broad information concerning the issue in question.

An expository essay requires the writer’s ability to put ideas in a simple, still, persuasive manner.

What is the Purpose of Expository Writing?

The expository text has several functions:

  • Providing truthful and factual descriptive information about a subject.
  • Revealing the contrast between two or more things showing similarities and differences.
  • Explaining causal relationships between events or phenomena.
  • Answering a challenging question. Readers are supposed to see some solution to an issue.

110 Coolest Expository Essay Topics for Your Choosing: Pick One!

Looking for interesting expository essay topics look at 110 free options.

There is a huge number of expository essay topics students can choose from, but as experience shows, when the need strikes, they can hardly think of even one. Where to look for these topics and how to make the best choice? For starters, you need to understand what kind of task you’re facing. An expository paper is a piece of writing that seeks to explore, analyze, and illustrate a topic. You have to maintain a proper academic tone and use reliable sources, but picking a theme is the first step. With our help, you’ll be done with it in a few minutes!

Tips for Choosing Inspiring Expository Essay Ideas

Many students believe that choosing a solid topic is a piece of cake. They are wrong. It might be easy to hire professionals and tell them, “Please write my essay for me and come up with a theme for it,” but things get complicated when you’re working on your own. No worries, though, because we prepared tips to help you choose wisely!

  • Look into your interests. Search for the best expository essay prompts among your interests. There has to be something you like or wouldn’t mind researching. Think of your favorite books: Which topics do they explore? Consider your browser search history: What subjects did you discuss or investigate last? Answering these questions will give you direction.
  • Pick a general topic first. Select a wide category of potential expository topics. It could be education, traveling, literature — simply decide on which sphere you’re interested in. Once again, this will give you the initial push you need before you can pick something specific.
  • Do limited research. After you settle on potential general topics for expository essays, do some minimal research on them. You could limit yourself to Wikipedia articles or get a professional APA paper writer to collect vital tidbits — the point is in gathering enough info to understand if this is the theme you’d like to explore properly in your essay.
  • Narrow your choice down to something more specific. Now that you have an idea for a topic for expository essay, start narrowing it down. As an example, if you picked the latest medical discoveries, settle on a concrete one or two. Always go from a wide category to a smaller one — this tip never fails to be useful.

Hello!

Hello there! I am Laura Callisen, and I fancy myself to be a modern “Renaissance person.” I suppose my 30-something self began my incredible journey after having been born in Stavanger, Norway and then immigrating to the U.S. (Utah, actually) at the age of 5. I am certain that this change was more of a cultural “shock” for my parents than for me, because I quickly mastered the language and was clever enough to “play the game” of public education in America. After graduating from Skyline High School, where I spent two years as the school newspaper editor, obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in English and journalism from the University of Utah was a natural culmination of my love for writing.

My inclination to be socially conscious led me to lots of community outreach and volunteering during my college years, especially in the areas of educational and housing improvement for the poor and a number of environmental crusades. My passion for philosophy and travel have now taken over, and I am enthralled with the widely varied value systems of all cultures in which I can immerse myself, if only temporarily. My life as a freelance writer allows a freedom I never want to sacrifice for a stuffy office!

What Are Expository Essay Topics?

Expository essay topics are those that require students to describe the underlying reasons and meaning behind specific conclusions. This involves analyzing data or exploring how something happened, what it is, and why it transformed over time. Particularly, you will focus on defining, explaining, informing, or elaborating on arguments so that readers can understand something clearly. An expository writing topic permits you to illuminate your points and offer clarity by using descriptions, details, facts, and explanations. Some topics for an expository essay may necessitate outlining precise steps of a process straightforwardly. The main purpose of these themes, however, is to educate readers.

Expository Essay Topics Basics

Characteristics of Good Expository Essay Topics

When choosing a subject for your schoolwork, concentrate on good expository topics that can influence your audience positively. Good topics for expository essays should:

  • Be narrow enough and fit in the wider observations.
  • Facilitate the generation of ideas freely.
  • Not be longer than a sentence, and it must express your main argument.
  • Have adequate evidence that can be gathered easily.
  • Be prominent.

How to Choose an Expository Essay Topic?

While it is possible to compose a paper on any expository topic, this does not suggest that you can select random subjects. Your work must emerge as informative and interesting. Of course, you must also make sure your essay is relevant to what you are completing. Consider these steps for selecting expository writing topics:

  • Read your assignment instructions carefully. What course theme do you need to focus on?
  • Deliberate on your readers. Is it a history, sociology, or philosophy audience?
  • Generate a list of topics for an expository essay through brainstorming. Identify the subjects that you are interested in. Just write freely without thinking.
  • Assess your themes by considering their relevance or appropriateness depending on what kind of work you are doing. Is it a process, definition, compare and contrast, classify and divide, or cause and effect essay? Ensure any selected issues can be explained.
  • Narrow your focus by centering on a specific aspect of a topic for an expository essay. This helps you avoid too broad issues that are difficult to describe fully.
  • Finally, check for credible sources by ensuring that you can locate adequate information about an issue. These types of compositions require enough details to offer a thorough description. Just like with synthesis essay topics , you might need to work with multiple sources. So, remember to seek help from your instructor if you have doubts about your choice.

What Is An Expository Essay?

Writing an expository essay is a little different from a traditional essay. This type of writing is bounded by arguments and logic, providing the reader with a comprehensive view of the problem at hand. Each of the paragraph in this essay represents one fact that is addressed with relevant references. The most challenging thing while writing an expository essay is finding the perfect expository essay topic. This article will shine light upon some fascinating expository essay topics that might elevate writing standards.

What Are Expository Essay Topics?

While choosing the topics for expository essays, always focus on selecting a narrow subject. For example, if you are asked to write about vehicles, identify a car that you love. This way, a narrow essay may be formulated. Never go for general and cliché topics because they might be boring and uninteresting for the reader. A tremendous expository topic is about something close to your heart. Choose a topic that has a purpose in your life so that the content created might have a meaning for the reader. Most students just pluck out random topics from the internet because of the existing essays on that specific subject. The reader is not looking for the same old boring essays. Choosing the perfect expository writing topics might make or break your essay. Research is also an important element while crafting the best essay. Try to spend a maximum amount of time in researching the topic so that you can take out relevant examples and facts that may aid in boosting the credibility of your essay. A great topic will always contain content that is backed up by multiple well-reputed scholarly articles.

Expository writing ideas are hard to find, but if one comes across your mind, note it down on your phone. Always be in search of a great topic that might impress your teacher. Remember, the best topics come out of the weirdest and unpredictable circumstances. Happy Writing!
