Objective: As an alternative to the traditional approach to physical exercise, new kinds of organized physical activity have been developed designed to engage large segments of the population. Among these, Zumba fitness is extremely popular, with a growing number of participants. This article aims to summarize and analyze the body of evidence on the effects of Zumba fitness interventions on physical function, fitness, and wellbeing. TYPE: Systematic review.

Literature survey: Keyword "Zumba" was identified as term for the literature research in MEDLINE, Scopus, Bandolier, PEDro, and Web of Science. Only studies published in peer-reviewed journals written in English language were considered.

Methodology: Eleven manuscripts were classified as eligible with 586 total participants, ranging in age from 18 to 65 years. After a quality appraisal, we classified 4 studies as high-quality investigations and 7 as low quality. Results were summarized in several domains: "anthropometric parameters and body composition," "hormonal and metabolic profiles," "aerobic and cardiovascular performance," "muscular fitness parameters," and "quality of life, pain score and physical activity questionnaire."

Synthesis: Results from this systematic review indicated that Zumba fitness could be considered an effective type of physical activity able to improve aerobic capacity. Small but positive benefits were noted for reducing body weight and other body measurements. Furthermore, other effects, including psychological and social benefits on quality of life, were found after Zumba fitness interventions. Otherwise, limited evidence described positive effects on muscular strength and flexibility.

Conclusions: Zumba fitness could be considered an effective type of physical activity able to improve aerobic capacity. Limited evidence described positive effects on muscular strength and flexibility.

Dance has been used as a physical expression of emotions, celebration, ceremony, worship, and entertainment for centuries. The Oxford Dictionary defines dance as moving rhythmically to music, usually following a specific sequence of steps. Ballet, contemporary, tap, jazz, hip-hop, folk, and step dancing are popular forms of dance.

Research shows that dance as an exercise format, or dance fitness, not only combines cardiovascular benefits of movements set to music but also offers the social aspect of a group setting, which may promote longer-term adherence to exercise. [1]

Here we specifically explore Zumba Fitness®, a popular program worldwide that involves aerobic exercise using Latin-inspired dance themes and music. The choreography is less formal than in traditional dance classes and encourages the feel of a “dance party.” [2]   Zumba has been found to boost intrinsic motivation, which is defined as engaging in an activity because of the innate pleasure it brings. [3]

Exercise of any type carries the risk of injury. Zumba requires a level of coordination to perform rhythmic Latin dance-inspired movements. It is usually fast-paced, including twisting motions at the hip, knee, and ankle. Proper body alignment can be harder to control when the music tempo is fast and routines move quickly. Jumps or hops can lead to lower back pain in less-conditioned participants. If a participant focuses too much on following the instructor and keeping up with their classmates rather than paying attention to their own physical limitations, injuries can occur.

As with other types of aerobic exercise, research has been published on Zumba-related injuries, with the most frequently injured sites being knees, ankles, and shoulders. [4] It appears that a higher frequency of weekly classes increases the risk of injuries more than age or exercise experience. This finding is consistent with another study that found that Zumba instructors were seven times more likely to suffer injury than class participants, likely due to their high total volume of moderate-to-vigorous weekly activity. [5]

Tips to prevent injury:

  • Check with your doctor. Discuss if a dance fitness class like Zumba is safe with your medical conditions.
  • Introduce yourself to the instructor. Inform the instructor if you are brand new to the format, if you have sensitive areas of the body, or are recovering from an injury. An experienced instructor will monitor you throughout the class and offer modifications for complex movements.
  • Wear proper dance fitness shoes. Good arch support with a flexible sole supports the foot while allowing it to pivot across the floor using multidirectional movements. Most running shoes are not a good choice because they grip the floor and promote forward motion, whereas Zumba includes more lateral (side-to-side) movements. A simple walking or tennis shoe may be a good option to support commonly used movements.
  • Choose a class that takes place in a fitness facility or dance studio. These locations are more likely to have proper flooring, such as hardwood floors with rubber underlay that support pivoting of the feet while helping to absorb shock. Zumba classes in a community center or church may use rooms with concrete or carpeted floors that can lead to twisted ankles and knee strain, regardless if wearing the proper shoes.
  • Warm-up before class. Not all Zumba classes will provide an adequate warm-up session, so spend 10-15 minutes before class walking on a treadmill or marching in place to increase blood flow and oxygen to your muscles. This reduces stress on the body when you start dancing.
  • Modify movements. If a movement looks too vigorous or extreme, don’t hesitate to substitute a different movement that is more comfortable. You may try marching or doing step-touches until the routine moves on to the next movement.
  • If you are new, stand in the back. It is often less crowded and allows you to experience the class at your own pace, modify movements, and feel less pressure to keep up with everyone else.

Zumba and Health

Dance fitness has been ranked the second most popular leisure-time physical activity after walking among women ages 25 to 75 years, and an activity recommended in the Global Action Plan On Physical Activity 2018–2030 established by WHO. [6]   There is research on Zumba to reduce cardiovascular risk, but many studies are limited by small sample sizes, shorter durations of 8-12 weeks, and lack of control groups. [7,8]   The intensity of Zumba enters the moderate aerobic zone, but adding jumping and faster-paced music increases intensity. There appears to be a wide range in intensity levels of Zumba classes depending upon the choreography and enthusiasm of the instructor, which has likely contributed to variability in Zumba research. [2]

  • In an 8-week trial, previously inactive women ages 35-45 practiced Zumba three times a week for 60 minutes. They showed significant improvement in respiratory function and decreased body mass index and fat mass compared with the control group (no exercise). [9] Other small trials showed similar findings, as well as improvements in blood pressure. [10,11]
  • Zumba has been shown to improve VO2 peak, the maximum amount of oxygen the body uses during exercise, and to increase strength in female participants up to age 63. [8,12,13]
  • A 16-week study of 98 healthy women ages 25 to 50 years who were inactive at baseline were randomized to take either a one-hour Zumba class, the Zumba class followed by 20 extra minutes of strength training, or usual lifestyle (control group). Both exercise groups took place three days a week, and both groups showed decreased waist circumference, improvements in tests of balance and musculoskeletal fitness (sit-ups, handgrip strength), and increased aerobic fitness compared with the control group. [1]
  • A systematic review of 11 studies on Zumba including participants from 18 to 65 years found modest benefits in reducing body weight, improving aerobic fitness, and increasing psychological and social benefits regarding quality of life. However limited evidence was found on improving muscle strength and flexibility. [14]
  • In 60 middle-aged women (mean age of 36) with fibromyalgia, Zumba improved motor function, memory, and reduced symptoms of depression after three months compared with a control group. [15] Other small studies looking at the effects of Zumba on fibromyalgia include reducing pain and improving physical functioning. [16]
  • Other studies have found that participation in Zumba classes improved autonomy and quality of life, and increased a sense of purpose in life compared with controls. [13,17,18]
  • The high-impact movements of Zumba have been theorized to stimulate bone, due to the force and stress produced during its practice. [19]   A 12-week controlled trial of 55 previously inactive premenopausal women ages 30-50 found that participants in the Zumba group (40-minute classes three times a week) maintained their bone mineral density and also increased it at certain sites such as the hip and legs compared with a control group (no exercise) who showed decreased bone mineral density.

Zumba Gold® is an offshoot of Zumba that is adapted for older adults to be lower in intensity with movements that focus on balance, range of motion, and coordination. Research has been published on its safety, high rates of compliance by participants, and intrinsic motivation to exercise in clinical populations such as hemodialysis patients and those with Parkinson’s disease. [20,21]

Bottom Line

Zumba Fitness is a dance-based aerobic exercise class that is popular, especially among women, of all ages and body sizes. It offers a range of benefits including improving aerobic fitness, body composition, and balance. Although the intensity of an average Zumba class is moderate to vigorous, modifications can be made to meet the specific needs of individuals. Zumba Gold is a lower-intensity format targeting older adults and those with increased physical limitations that has been found to be generally safe and to stimulate intrinsic motivation to exercise. The group setting of Zumba classes can provide socialization and additional mental health benefits. As with any exercise format, there is risk of injury so it is important to discuss the feasibility of Zumba with your doctor before beginning a program.

Solar eclipses can affect the structure and dynamics of Earth's upper atmosphere, otherwise known as the ionosphere, according to NASA . Since the ionosphere contains charged particles and is responsible for reflecting and refracting radio waves, it can possibly affect radio communications and navigation systems.

"While solar eclipses can have noticeable effects on the ionosphere, they are generally temporary and localized to the region experiencing the eclipse," according to NASA.

However, because Wisconsin most likely won't be facing high volumes of crowds traveling to see the partial eclipse, cellular networks won't be as strained across the state as areas in the path of totality.

Will cellular data work during the solar eclipse?

Cellular data should work during the solar eclipse, especially as some networks have expanded since the last solar eclipse in 2017.

AT&T has said it expanded the 5G network to reach millions of people in 24,500 cities across the country. T-Mobile said it has deployed additional cell sites to handle the influx of people traveling to view the eclipse. T-Mobile also said it increased investments in network hardening by more than 30% over the past two years.

If you don't have solar glasses yet to watch the total eclipse happening April 8 , not to worry. The good folks at NASA have an easy way you can view the eclipse by making a box pinhole projector with common items found around your home — no degree in rocket science required.

A  rare total solar eclipse  Monday is set to chart a 115-mile-wide path over portions of Mexico, the United States and Canada. Millions of people are expected to flock toward the path of totality where they can catch a glimpse of this once-in-a-lifetime spectacle.

Experts caution those watching the eclipse to be careful: it's never safe to look directly at the Sun. Doing so can permanently damage your vision. Except for a brief moment during the totality when the moon completely blocks out the Sun's rays, you should wear specialized eye protection when viewing an eclipse.

To safeguard your vision, here's how to make a box pinhole projector with common household items.

Step 1 to create a box pinhole projector, gather these items

To make a box pinhole project, gather up the following items:

  • A cardboard box (you can use a cereal box, shoe box, or a box from Amazon)
  • Aluminum foil
  • A white sheet of paper (make sure it's large enough to cover one end of the box)

Step 2, making the pinhole projector

Follow these instructions for creating your box pinhole projector.

  • Using a pencil, trace one end of the box onto the white sheet of paper. Next, cut out the shape. The paper shape you cut out should be able to fit snugly inside the box.
  • Next, cut two square holes on the opposite end of the box — one on the right side and the other on the left. If you're using a cereal box, tape up the middle so your box doesn't fall apart.
  • Cover one of the square holes completely with aluminum foil. Use tape to keep the foil in place.
  • Take a push pin and punch a small hole carefully in the center of the aluminum foil. This is the hole sunlight will enter. The larger square hole you made is where you'll look into the box.
  • Congrats, you're done!

Step 3, using your pinhole projector to look at a solar eclipse

To use your box pinhole projector, stand with your back to the sun, then hold the large square hole up to your eye and move the box around until sunlight enters the tiny hole in the aluminum foil. In a moment, you should see the sun projected onto the white paper inside the box.

What solar eclipse-gazing has looked like for the past two centuries.

In a black-and-white photo from 1945, nine men, some in military uniforms, stand in the middle of a New York City street. They are holding a small piece of what looks like glass or a photographic negative above their heads to protect their eyes as they watch the eclipse. The original border of the print, as well as some numbers and crop marks drawn onto it, are visible.

For centuries, people have been clamoring to glimpse solar eclipses. From astronomers with custom-built photographic equipment to groups huddled together with special glasses, this spectacle has captivated the human imagination.

Creating a Permanent Record

In 1860, Warren de la Rue captured what many sources describe as the first photograph of a total solar eclipse . He took it in Rivabellosa, Spain, with an instrument known as the Kew Photoheliograph . This combination of a telescope and camera was specifically built to photograph the sun.

Forty years later, Nevil Maskelyne, a magician and an astronomy enthusiast, filmed a total solar eclipse in North Carolina. The footage was lost, however, and only released in 2019 after it was rediscovered in the Royal Astronomical Society’s archives.

Telescopic Vision

For scientists and astronomers, eclipses provide not only an opportunity to view the moon’s umbra and gaze at the sun’s corona, but also to make observations that further their studies. Many observatories, or friendly neighbors with a telescope, also make their instruments available to the public during eclipses.

Women from Wellesley College in Massachusetts and their professor tested out equipment ahead of their eclipse trip (to “catch old Sol in the act,” as the original New York Times article phrased it) to New London, Conn., in 1922.

A group from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania traveled to Yerbaniz, Mexico, in 1923, with telescopes and a 65-foot camera to observe the sun’s corona .

Dr. J.J. Nassau, director of the Warner and Swasey Observatory at Case School of Applied Science in Cleveland, prepared to head to Douglas Hill, Maine, to study an eclipse in 1932. An entire freight car was required to transport the institution’s equipment.

Visitors viewed a solar eclipse at an observatory in Berlin in the mid-1930s.

Indirect Light

If you see people on Monday sprinting to your local park clutching pieces of paper, or with a cardboard box of their head, they are probably planning to reflect or project images of the solar eclipse onto a surface.

Cynthia Goulakos demonstrated a safe way to view a solar eclipse , with two pieces of cardboard to create a reflection of the shadowed sun, in Lowell, Mass., in 1970.

Another popular option is to create a pinhole camera. This woman did so in Central Park in 1963 by using a paper cup with a small hole in the bottom and a twin-lens reflex camera.

Amateur astronomers viewed a partial eclipse, projected from a telescope onto a screen, from atop the Empire State Building in 1967 .

Back in Central Park, in 1970, Irving Schwartz and his wife reflected an eclipse onto a piece of paper by holding binoculars on the edge of a garbage basket.

Children in Denver in 1979 used cardboard viewing boxes and pieces of paper with small pinholes to view projections of a partial eclipse.

A crowd gathered around a basin of water dyed with dark ink, waiting for the reflection of a solar eclipse to appear, in Hanoi, Vietnam, in 1995.

Staring at the Sun (or, How Not to Burn Your Retinas)

Eclipse-gazers have used different methods to protect their eyes throughout the years, some safer than others .

In 1927, women gathered at a window in a building in London to watch a total eclipse through smoked glass. This was popularized in France in the 1700s , but fell out of favor when physicians began writing papers on children whose vision was damaged.

Another trend was to use a strip of exposed photographic film, as seen below in Sydney, Australia, in 1948 and in Turkana, Kenya, in 1963. This method, which was even suggested by The Times in 1979 , has since been declared unsafe.

Solar eclipse glasses are a popular and safe way to view the event ( if you use models compliant with international safety standards ). Over the years there have been various styles, including these large hand-held options found in West Palm Beach, Fla., in 1979.

Parents and children watched a partial eclipse through their eclipse glasses in Tokyo in 1981.

Slimmer, more colorful options were used in Nabusimake, Colombia, in 1998.

In France in 1999.

And in Iran and England in 1999.

And the best way to see the eclipse? With family and friends at a watch party, like this one in Isalo National Park in Madagascar in 2001.

The April 8 total solar eclipse is finally here — and it’s sure to amaze and delight the millions who see it.

Everyone in the Lower 48 states will be able to view at least a partial solar eclipse, assuming cloud-free skies .

To savor the eclipse, you don’t need special equipment. Even if you can’t get your hands on eclipse glasses , there are old school, low-tech ways to see it. If you’re crafty and canny, the eclipse can still be a memorable experience.

Safety first

The first rule of enjoying the eclipse is to avoid looking directly at the sun without eye protection. Even brief glances can cause permanent damage.

The only exception to this rule is for lucky spectators in the path of totality during the few minutes of the total eclipse, when the sun is fully blocked by the moon.

For those witnessing the partial solar eclipse, even when most of the sun’s surface is blocked, the remaining, visible crescent is still intensely bright and cannot be safely viewed without eye protection.

But, if you don’t have eye protection, here are some safe ways to experience the partial eclipse through indirect means:

Make a pinhole projector

A way around looking directly the sun is to make your own eclipse projector using a cereal box. It’s a safe and terrific way to capture the eclipse action.

Clear the kitchen table and find the craft scissors. In addition to the cereal box, you’ll need a piece of aluminum foil, tape and a small nail or pushpin.

First, eat your Froot Loops — or whatever toasted grain you prefer — and keep the box. On a white piece of paper or white cardboard, trace the bottom of the box. Then, clip out the traced rectangle from the paper and put it in the bottom of the opened box. That’s your screen that images of the eclipse will project onto.

Cut out two squares (1.5 inches should suffice) on the lid of the box and then tape the lid back together. For one square, cover the hole in foil and tape it down. Gently put a pushpin or small nail hole through it, as that is the lens that the sun’s light will pass through. The smaller the hole, the sharper the projected image.

When using your personal box theater, turn away from the sun — and let the sun’s rays shine through the tiny pin hole. Look through the other hole in the lid to see the eclipse action — during the eclipse you’ll see the moon biting a chunk from the sun.

Other kinds of small boxes — such as shoe boxes or small package boxes — work well, too. And your kids can decorate them for fun.

Looking to the trees

If you’re not inclined to make a projector box, you can also view the partial phases of the eclipse in the shadows of trees and plants.

The small gaps in between leaves, branches and pine needles act as miniature projectors. When light passes through, a small image of the sun is cast onto the ground. As the partial eclipse progresses, you’ll see the small circles evolve into sickle-shaped crescents, eventually waning to a sliver.

You may consider holding a white piece of paper or poster board beneath a tree or plant to make it easier to spot the shadows.

Gadgets and fingers

Leaves aren’t special — they just happen to be good at producing tiny projections. But realistically, any hole that’s about a quarter inch wide, give or take, will do the trick. That means you could even parade around outside with your pasta colander, cheese grater or serving spoon with holes in it and look at its shadow. Place white paper or poster board on the ground to see the projection more clearly.

You could also just hold your fingers out and crisscross them to make for half a dozen or so small openings between. Just extend your fingers on both hands as if you’re trying to make a W , and then overlap them.

Simple, yet elegant.
