A review of the effectiveness of stress management skills training on academic vitality and psychological well-being of college students

Objective: Carrying out the appropriate psychological interventions to improve vitality and mental well-being is critical. The study was carried out to review the effectiveness of stress management training on the academic life and mental well-being of the students of Shahed University.

Methodology: The method used was quasi-experimental with a pretest-posttest plan and control group. Therefore, a total of 40 students of Shahed University of Tehran were selected by a convenience sampling method and were organized into two groups: experimental and control group. Both groups were pretested by using an academic vitality inventory and an 84-question psychological well-being inventory. Then, the experimental group received stress management skills training for ten sessions, and the control group did not receive any intervention. Next, both groups were post-tested, and the data were analyzed with SPSS-21 software by using descriptive and inferential statistical methods.

Findings: The findings showed that the stress management skills training significantly contributed to promoting the academic vitality and psychological well-being of students (p < 0.001).

Conclusions: It was concluded from this research that teaching the methods for dealing with stress was an effective strategy to help students exposed to high stress and pressure, and this was due to its high efficiency, especially when it was held in groups, had a small cost, and it was accepted by the individuals.

Introduction

Challenges during education create sources of stress for students, and put their health at risk, in a way that affects their learning abilities [ 1 ]. Therefore, paying attention to the factors that could have a positive impact on the agreeableness and could increase the positive psychological states, and as a result, the physical and psychological health of the students was of great importance.

Among the important factors that affect people’s ability to adapt to the stresses of studying era is academic vitality [ 2 ]. Academic vitality means an adaptive response to various challenges and barriers experienced during education [ 3 ]. When a person does things spontaneously, does not feel not only frustrated and tired, but also constantly feels the strength and increased energy, and overall has a sense of inner vitality [ 2 ]. Therefore, the academic life has a relationship with the individual’s adaptation to the various situations of the academic period, feelings of self-efficacy and empowerment in the face of challenges, experiencing less anxiety and depression, a sense of responsibility in dealing with the academic tasks and better academic success [ 3 ]. Despite the high importance of academic vitality in the successful confrontation with the challenging academic period, the literature review of the studies managed in Iran showed that few studies were performed on the factors promoting this important variable. Therefore, an attempt to address this research gap increased the need for the current study.

Another important positive psychological state in students is the psychological well-being. The psychological well-being factor is defined as a person’s real talents growth and has six components that are the purpose in life, positive relations with others, personal growth, self-acceptance, autonomy, and environmental mastery [ 4 ]. The purpose in life means having a purpose and direction in life and pursuing them [ 5 ]. Positive relations with the others mean having warm, satisfactory relations along with confidence and empathy [ 6 ]. Personal growth means having a sense of continuous growth and the capacity for it and having an increased sense of efficacy and wisdom [ 4 ]. Self-acceptance means having a positive attitude towards oneself and accepting the various aspects of oneself [ 6 ]. Autonomy means the feeling of self-determination, independence, and self-assessment against personal criteria [ 4 ]. Moreover, environmental mastery means a sense of competence and the ability to manage the complex environment around [ 5 ].

However, one of the most significant parts affecting the psychological health and well-being of individuals is life skills training [ 7 ]. Life skills’ training is critical for students, in a way that on this basis, many universities have started to teach life skills and stress management skills to improve the physical and psychological health of their students in the recent years [ 8 ]. The main objective of the World Health Organization regarding the creation of a life skills plan is in the field of psychological health. Therefore, different societies throughout the world try to promote the implementation and evaluation of the programs training in life skills. It focuses on the growth of mental abilities such as problem-solving, coping with emotions, self-awareness, social harmony, and stress management among children, teenagers, and even adults [ 9 ]. From the life skills, training in stress management skills is critical, because students need to deal effectively with stressful issues and factors. Accordingly, it was thought that teaching stress management skills is very efficient in improving the students’ positive psychological states, in particular, their vitality and mental well-being. Therefore, this study examined the effectiveness of the stress management skills training on the academic life and psychological well-being among Shahed University students.

Methodology

The study was quasi-experimental with a pretest-posttest. The analytical community of the study included all the students of Shahed University of Tehran in the fall of 2015, who were selected with a convenience method. For the calculation of the sample size, the appropriate sample size in experimental studies was of 15 people for each group [ 10 ]. At first, the sample size of 15 individuals was selected for each group. Then, to increase the statistical power and to manage the possible decrease in the number of participants, the sample size of 20 individuals (n = 20) was considered for each group. The sampling was voluntary non-random from among all the students studying at Shahed University. The inclusion criteria included an informed consent and the willingness to participate in the research, the ability to take part in the sessions and to collaborate in carrying out assignments, willingness to cooperate in completing the instruments, and the age range of 18 to 35 years. The exclusion criteria included the lack of desire to participate in the sessions and the absence to more than three courses in the preparation method, the lack of the ability to participate in the sessions, lack of cooperation in carrying out assignments, and receiving any training or psychological therapy that was not part of the program of this research.

The procedure of the study was that from all the students studying at Shahed University, a number was non-randomly and voluntarily selected, and if they met the inclusion criteria, they were randomly assigned to two groups: experimental and control. At the beginning and before starting the study, an informed consent was obtained from all of them to uphold moral considerations, through informing them of the aim of the study and the impact of such studies in improving their psychological status. Then, all the information of the participants were collected, and they were assured that the information would remain confidential by the researcher. Then, the experimental group received group stress management training for ten sessions, and the control group did not receive any intervention. In the end, both groups were post-tested. The protocol of stress management training sessions is presented in Table 1 .

The instruments used in the study included a demographic sample page, an academic vitality questionnaire, and a psychological well-being scale (PWBS-18).

Demographic sample page: The demographic sample page included age, gender, educational level, and marital status. The sample page was prepared and evaluated by the researchers of the study.

Academic vitality questionnaire: This questionnaire was developed by Dehqanizadeh MH, Hosseinchari M (2012) [ 3 ], based on the academic vitality scale of Martin AJ, Marsh HW (2006) [ 15 ], which had four items. After various implementations of the items of the questionnaire, the final version was rewritten, and the result was that the revised version had ten items. Then the items above were again examined in a preliminary study on a sample including 186 high school students, who were chosen by using a cluster random sampling, and their psychometric properties were examined. The results of the examination showed that the obtained Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, by removing [ 3 ] item number 8, was 0.80 and the retest coefficient was 0.73. Also, the range of correlation of the elements with the total score was between 0.51 and 0.68. These results indicated that the items had a satisfactory internal consistency and stability.

Psychological well-being scale (SPWB): Riffe’s mental well-being scale [ 11 ] was made up of 84 questions in Likert’s 7-degree scale (from “strongly disagree” to “agree strongly”). It was a self-report questionnaire, which measured six components of the psychological well-being, including purpose in life, positive relations with others, personal growth, self-acceptance, autonomy, and environmental mastery. The internal consistency coefficients for the components of this questionnaire were obtained from 0.83 to 0.91. In Mohammadpour and Joshanloo research (2014) [ 6 ], the reliability coefficient of this scale with Cronbach’s alpha method for the psychological well-being scale obtained was 0.81. Also, for the subscales of the test including self-compliance, environmental mastery, personal growth and development, link with others, the goal in life, and self-acceptance were obtained at 0.60, 0.64, 0.54, 0.58, 0.65, and 0.61, respectively. A study performed by Kafka and Kozma (2002) was conducted to verify the validity of the items of the Riffe’s psychological well-being scale. The findings showed that there was a high correlation between this scale and the subjective well-being scale (SWB) and the satisfaction with life scale (SWLS). In the present study, the reliability coefficient with Cronbach’s alpha method for the psychological well-being scale obtained was 0.81. Also, for the subscales of the test, including self-compliance, environmental mastery, personal growth and development, relations with others, the goal in life, and self-acceptance were obtained at 0.60, 0.64, 0.54, 0.58, 0.65, and 0.61, respectively.

The SPSS-20 software was used for data analysis. The statistical method used for the data analysis of the research on the level of descriptive statistics was mean, standard deviation, frequency, and frequency percentage indexes, and on the inferential statistics, univariate and multivariate analysis of covariance model were used.

Findings of the research

The demographic properties of the sample present in the study are presented in Table 2 .

As presented in Table 1 , the largest frequency of participation belonged to the participants in the age range of 21 to 25 with 14 individuals (35%) and the lowest frequency of individuals in the range of 18 to 20 years, with six individuals (15%). In addition, the mean age of the participants was 24.85, and the standard deviation was 4.41. The other information about the demographic properties of the present sample is provided in Table 2

As shown in Table 3 , the mean scores of purpose in life, positive relations with others, personal growth, self-acceptance, autonomy, environmental mastery, total score of psychological well-being, and academic vitality of posttest were increased in the test group as associated with the control group.

As shown in Table 4 , the null hypothesis of the equality of variances of the two groups in the academic vitality and psychological well-being with all its components was confirmed. It meant that the variances of the two clusters in the population were equal and had no significant difference for the academic vitality and the psychological well-being variable with all its components. Thus, given the compliance with the Levene assumption, the analysis of covariance of the results of the hypothesis of the research were permitted.

As shown in Table 5 , the significance level of all the tests (p < 0.001) indicated that there was a significant difference between the two groups at least in one of the dependent variables (academic vitality and psychological well-being with its components). And, according to the eta square, 0.89 percent of the differences observed among individuals were associated with the effect of the independent variable, which was the intervention method (stress management skills training). On the other hand, given that the statistical power was 0.95, which was higher than 0.80, the sample size was acceptable for the research. The results related to significant differences in any of the dependent variables are listed below.

According to Table 6 , the significance level was p < 0.001, the hypothesis of the difference between the academic vitality and the psychological well-being with its components in the two groups was confirmed. It stated that 0.54, 0.25, 0.52, 0.64, 0.60, 0.59, 0.45 and 0.81 percent change in the academic vitality, individuals’ purpose in life, positive relations with others, personal growth, self-acceptance, autonomy, environmental mastery, and psychological well-being scores were due to the independent variable (stress management skills training). Therefore, it could be said that stress management skills training increased the academic vitality and the psychological well-being and all of its components.

Discussion and conclusions

Given the aim of this study, which was to examine the effectiveness of stress management skills training on the academic vitality and psychological well-being of the students of Shahed University, the results of the univariate and multivariate analysis of covariance showed that stress management skills training had a significant impact on increasing the academic vitality and psychological well-being. The findings indicated that the stress management skills training had a major impact on increasing the academic life. It was consistent with different studies of Habibi M (2015), Pakdaman A, Ganji K, Ahmadzadeh M (2012), Shirbim Z, Sudani M, Shafi-Abadi A (2008) [ 12 - 14 ].

In explaining their similar finding, Pakdaman A, Ganji K, Ahmadzadeh M (2012) [ 13 ] also stated that life skills training helped in the improvement of the academic conditions of the subjects. In addition, this was because of this training, with growing different skills of the students, helping the students know their strengths and weaknesses, and overall, help the individuals move from weaknesses and skill deficits to capable and strong skills. Therefore, this could provide the students with better educational conditions [ 14 ]. In explaining their similar finding, Shafi-Abadi (2008) stated that teaching life skills, including stress management skills, are one of the ways to improve the mental health of the individuals of the community and to prevent harms. In fact, these teachings protected the health and mental hygiene of the society and protected it against diseases, disabilities, and disturbances in human relations. As a result, the feeling of security and solidarity increased among the members of the society, and then their senses of happiness, vitality, and health increased.

The findings showed that stress management skills’ training has a significant impact on the psychological well-being. It was consistent with the multiple studies of Qadiri-Bahramabadi F, Mikaeli-Manee F (2015), Qanbari N, Habibi M, Shams-Aldini S (2013), Alavi-Arjmand N, Kashaninia Z, Hosseini MA, Reza-Soltani P (2012), Chubforushzadeh A, Kalantari M, Molavi H (2009) [ 16 - 19 ].

In explaining their similar findings, Qadiri-Bahramabadi F, Mikaeli-Manee F (2015) [ 16 ] stated that facing numerous stresses required teaching and learning of appropriate stress management skills. In other words, during stress, individuals must know the necessary coping skills to reduce the effects of stress, and if the pressure was managed and the effective coping skills were applied, the person would be able to get along better with the needs and challenges of his/ her life. Therefore, the intervention of stress management led to the formation of good feelings about oneself, as well as a positive performance in the stable world. It created interest and motivation in people’s lives as well as increasing the self-confidence of the individuals. As a result, it increased the psychological well-being.

In explaining their similar finding, Qanbari N, Habibi M, Shams-Aldini S (2013) [ 17 ] stated that with the help of multiple strategies to manage stress such as relaxation, and muscular relaxation, stress and anxiety could be reduced. The individuals identified the somatic symptoms, and with mastering the ways to acquire relaxation, which was inconsistent with stress, reduced their anxiety and unpleasant feelings, thus increasing the psychological well-being. Also, in explaining their similar finding, Chubforushzadeh A, Kalantari M, Molavi H (2009) [ 19 ], stated that stress management treatments make multiple changes in the individual’s beliefs, feelings, and behaviors. Therefore, improving the individual’s evaluations and coping skills, and the provided practices to integrate the learned separations with real life situations could lead to a decrease in the perceived stress and an increase in the psychological well-being.

Stress and Stress Management

Abstract Stress has become a major era that is affecting our everyday life. This situation comes about normally when the body is rising to a challenge or facing some difficulties. In this paper we intend to look at the bad and good stress and analyze them critically. The paper also intends to look at the evolution of stress and how it has affected people since its discovery. This will help the readers to get a clear concept of what stress is, what causes it and how we can prevent and reduce the stress. The paper will also analyze on the various stress symptoms that we should look at in order to detect the stress and ways of preventing stress in our life. Accepting the world as it is will help us avoid stress and we therefore intend to look at the strategies used to prevent stress. The paper will also look at the good and the bad stress. Generally most people are aware of the bad stress. This paper will also look at stress in a positive way and show how it helps individuals achieve successful goals in life since it triggers working harder instead of letting stress tear us apart.

Stress Evolution

Stress is said to exist throughout man’s evolution. Homo sapiens had to win the survival game with their proper coping styles and dominant gene. The test of survival is applicable to all the evolution steps and this survival concerned the idea of changing conditions which means coping with the stress. This stage of stress has been faced by men for thousands of trials and error. Men have been led to extraordinary invention of technology in order to cope with survival events and this technology all started with a sharpened stone. Viewing the point from microevolution, stress is a factor which is termed very powerful especially induction of it in transpositions since it leads to generation of new variations of genetics in various populations under environment conditions which are very stressful. The ethical remains that we can protect ourselves from stress follow through unto wards subjects on handling the situation of stress or work a condition of stress to our own advantage. The choice that we have is using the situations of stress to or advantage or becoming the slaves to the situations of stress.

What is Stress

Stress is a feeling that is normally created and developed during the times when humans react in particular events. At this point the body rises to a challenge and thus goes on to prepare encountering with a tough situation with strength, focus, heightened alertness and stamina. Stressors are known as the events that trigger or provoke stress and they are said to cover a number of situations including everything from absolute physical risk to making staging or taking a semester’s significant of your toughest focus. For the human body to respond to stressors, it activates the specific hormones and the nervous system. A signal is sent to the adrenal glands by the hypothalamus in order to influence the production of more cortisol and adrenaline hormones thus releasing them to the bloodstream. The heart race is then speeded up by these hormones and also the metabolism, rate of breathing and blood pressure. In order to improve vision the pupils dilate while the blood vessels open more wide in order to let in more blood which flows in the groups of muscles and thus putting into alert our muscles. In the same process some of the stored glucose from the liver are released so as to increase the energy in the body and in order to cool the body sweat is produced. In order to handle the pressure all these physical changes are released by the body so as to prepare an individual to react immediately. This reaction is called stress response. When the body is working properly, the response augments the ability of a person to perform better under the pressure. However, the stress response can also lead to problems caused by overreactions or failure to reset properly.

Good Stress and Bad Stress

Stress response is also called flight response. During emergency situations, stress response can be dangerous. Some situations where it can be critical are in order to avoid an accident the driver slums the breaks or maybe sitting for the final exams. However, little of the stress can help an individual keep on his toes and be ready to rise and face the challenge. Through this the nervous system immediately goes back to its normal state and stands by so as to respond again when it will be needed. It is evident that stress does not happen all the time to immediate things but also to ongoing long term events such as a divorce, school and others. Low-level stress can be produced by long term situations of stress and this can be hard on individuals and last for a long time. However, the nervous system can sense this pressure which is normally continuous and thus keep on pumping out extra hormones of stress for a period of time. This can however wear out the reserves of the body and leave an individual feeling overwhelmed, the body system weak and other problems are also caused.

Stress Dynamics

In situations which are more challenging the brain prepares the body for action of defense (fight or flight) by releasing the stress hormones. The stress hormones then produce a defense action which is strong leading to them being used up in the blood stream and this leads to reduced anxiety symptoms and effects of stress. Failing to counter a situation of stress makes the chemicals and hormones to remain in the blood stream for a longer period of time. This results in physical symptoms of stress which include:

Dizziness Rapid Heartbeat Tens muscles Unfocused anxiety In everyday life, people face different types of stressors which if not released they will accumulate and can then bring harm to the body. If the stress accumulates in the body there is a risk of chronic and acute illnesses of psychosomatic which go on to weaken the immune system. Stress causes various problems to the human body including allergies, headaches, insomnia, asthma, irritable bowel syndrome, fatigue, heart ailments, ulcers and much more. According to Indian Psychologist Sanjay Churg, seventy percent to ninety percent of adults go to see physicians in relation to stress problems. It is clear that almost every person suffers from stress whether child, women, men and also fetuses. Some of the things causing stress include:

Demands of relationships Pressure at workplace Chronic health problems Traffic Snarls Tensions when growing up Meeting deadlines and others However, each person reacts to stress differently from the other. For some individuals, stress is known to provoke anxiety and feelings which in time intensifies and gets persistent. However, if the various individuals learn how to manage stress through understanding it effectively then we can prevent the effects of stress. There are various ways of coping with stress and the most important is change of lifestyle. Some of the effective methods of invading stress however include deep breathing, personal techniques of growth, physical exercises and massage and visualization.

Positive Stress

Positive and stress are two words which do not go together often. However, there are important instances when people rise to the stress challenge and achieve the unachievable. A good example includes the athletes, the scientists who stress themselves in order to bring out the best of the phenomenal world, a painter, composer and many more. According to psychologists, they believe that some situations of stress can help enhance the potential in us and become very helpful. The experts say that sometimes stress is necessary in our life but in moderate doses. The response of stress is referred as one of the best body defense systems against the inner and outer dangers. In risky or dangerous situations, the hormones of stress released from the body make us alert of any the danger and our senses increase the focus. At that moment the body is ready to act with more speed and strength. Stress therefore helps us to have more concerned, sharp and ready for any action. Stress is known to increase an individual’s performance. Instead of sitting down and succumbing in stress, most people use it as impetus so as to achieve success. It helps the faculties of people by stimulating them and they go deeper and are able to discover their success in the long run. The brain becomes biochemically and emotionally sharp in its performance when an individual is under stress.

Preventing and Managing Stress

Many people might think that they will never do anything in regards to their level of stress. This can be due to the fact that the family responsibility and career are always demanding, bills are ever coming, and there are never enough hours for one’s errands and much more. However, there is more control in us for our life than we may think. It only takes strength to realize that one is in control of his or her life and this becomes the foundation to managing the stress. Taking charge is the major activity in stress management and this includes taking charge of one’s schedule, emotions, environment, thoughts and ways of problem solving. The major goal is to balance one’s life in terms of relationships, time to work, fun, relaxation with the aim of holding up under pressures and facing challenges. The first step towards managing stress is through identification of stress sources in an individual’s life. However, it is evident that this is not an easy task as it sounds since in most cases the sources of stress are not so obvious and thus making it easy to overlook the major stress points including feelings, thoughts and behaviors. In order to clearly identify the major areas of stress in an individual’s life it is good to clearly look at the attitudes, excuses and habits. There are major strategies used to manage stress and they are discussed below: 1. Avoiding unnecessary stress In this life, we cannot avoid all the stress since it is also not right to avoid situations which require addressing. However, there are many things in this life that bring stress and we can easily do away with and some of them include: Learning to be independent and making decisions on your own without any influence. An individual should learn to say no and discover his or her limits thus sticking to them whether into professional or personal life. This is because if an individual takes more than he or she can handle, then they are exposed to a surefire for stress. Avoiding stressful people: If an individual causes stress to your life severally and the relationship cannot be turned around, it is better to limit the time spent with this person or do away with the relationship completely. Taking control of the environment: A good example is if a programme in the TV makes you anxious then turns it off. This is a good way of avoiding stress. Some other things that we can do away with include avoiding topics which are hot-bottom and paring down an individual’s to do list. 2. Altering Situations It is essential to alter a situation if it cannot be avoided. This will be essential especially if you figure out a way of changing things to prevent the problem recurring in the future. This strategy involves mostly changing the way people lead their daily life and communicate. Some of the changes include: Expressing feelings instead of hiding: It is good to communicate feelings or concerns which are bothering you in an open way. If one does not there is a likelihood of resentment growing inside you and the situation will not change. Willingness to compromise: Be willing to do something that you have requested from someone else. For example, if you expect a change of behavior from someone be willing to do the same. This shows that both parties will acquire a happy middle ground if they all have the willingness. Assertiveness and proper time management: It is good to learn on how to deal with issues head on and avoiding taking backseat in your own life. A lot of stress is caused by poor management of time. Planning ahead without overextending alters the level of stress in one’s life. 3. Adapting to the Stressor It is always good to change yourself if it is impossible to change the stressor. Adapting to situations of stress helps an individual regain his or her sense of control through changing one’s attitude and expectations. Some of the stressors we can adapt to include: Reframing problems: In order to prevent stress, it is advisable to look at them in a more positive perspective instead of fuming about small things. Adjusting one’s standards: A major source of avoiding stress is perfectionism. People normally set themselves up due to failure by demanding perfection. It is essential to set standards which are reasonable for us and other people and learning to be okay will be good enough. Focusing on the positive: It is advisable to reflect on things that we normally appreciate in our lives especially when the stress is getting us down. The best things we appreciate include the positive gifts and qualities. It is also very essential for people to adjust on their attitudes since this reduces stress. The way people think and what they think can highly have a profound emotional or physical effect in our well-being. 4. Accepting Things we cannot Change There are sources of stress which are unavoidable. Some stressors such as serious illnesses, national recessions and death of loved ones can never be prevented. In such a situation, the best way of coping with such stress includes accepting the way things are. Though acceptance maybe difficult it is in the long run easier than railing over a situation which is not changeable. Therefore it is important: Share Feelings: It is good to have an appointment with therapists or talk to trusted friends. It can be very cathartic to tell people what you are going through and also considered as a way of reducing tension. Learning to Forgive: It is clear that we live in an imperfect world and the thing is to accept this fact most especially that people make mistakes. In order to prevent stress, letting go of resentment and anger is important since it is a way of freeing oneself from negative energy and moving on. In conclusion Stress is a feeling that is normally created and developed during the times when humans react in particular events. It is clear that stress can lead to serious dangers in life especially for people who are suffering from certain diseases such as HIV/AIDS, terminal illnesses and others. In order to prevent these dangers it is essential to live positively and accept the world as it is. Being independent and forgiving is another way of preventing stress and moving on with life. In life it is clear that there is good stress and bad stress. Though in most cases stress is termed as bad, in other cases stress helps us work harder in achieving our goals and becoming more successful in life. Stress is a situation that can affect all including women, men, children and the rest. Stress is caused by various factors such as relationships, work, meeting deadlines and others. There are stresses which are not avoidable and cannot be prevented and these include death and serious illnesses. Therefore, it is advisable that we should accept things as they are and avoid trying to change what is unchangeable. However, talking to people who can be trusted like a therapist and friends is very significant since it helps ease the burden and reduce stress. It is very clear that stress is manageable if we take control of our lives. It only takes strength to realize that one is in control of his or her life and this becomes the foundation to managing the stress. Taking charge is the major activity in stress management and this includes taking charge of one’s schedule, emotions, environment, thoughts and ways of problem solving.

Living and stay at boarding school environment requires to approach the environment in the boarding school well. Because of the demands or burdens of some complain of dizziness, fear of not being able to memorize according to the target, difficulty sleeping, unable to concentrate which is a sign and symptom of stressfull. Research purposes to find out the relationship between life style management of ' mental health and stress levels. This study uses Cross Sectional Design, the sample was boarding school consist of 153 , using simple random sampling. The independent variable was mental health life style management and the dependent variable was the level of stress of. The instrument uses a questionnaire. Data analysis was performed with the Spearman's Rho correlation test Spearman's Rho statistical test results with a significance level of p <0.05 obtained p = 0,000, which means there was a relationship between life style management of ' mental health with stress levels. Life style management it needs to be applied by in carrying out their lives in Islamic boarding schools in order to increase their productivity and minimize the risk of illness and stay mentally healthy.

Stress is being encountered by the citizens at large, professionals with reservation of situations and environments. In reality the nature of stress may have variety individual to individual and situation to situation. Stress may be identified in the context of individuals' life as the financial, social and family issues oriented. Like all individuals, students in general and university students in particular are no exception and fall prey to stress like the common citizens which put them in a curbing position and as such make them constrained to adjust to the severity and of stress. Stress may be described as the body's reaction to a constraint that requires a physical, mental or emotional adaptation, adjustment or positive response. Students may deal with stress situations by changing the scenario, undergoing exercise, involving in gossips, asserting their position caliber or skill, diverting the feeling of labor into an enchantment, falling prey to drugs and sedatives ,taking excessive food of liking, finding time passing activity, deep breathing, and entering into chats with the loved ones. Modes of stress management even in the same community does not remain uniform as such stress management techniques used by a majority of the population around the globe is seen to be medicine use, reduction of activities, yoga, tai chi, religious prayers, massage, crying, and sleeping. The major objective of the study was to view the practices adopted by the students to manage their stress. The major research question of the study was how students manage their stress. The population of the study was university students. Selected through a convenient sampling technique questionnaire was the tool to gather data from the university students. The Chi-square test was applied to see the significance of difference among respondents' perception about the statements of the questionnaire. t-test and ANOVA were also used the view the significance difference about opinions and the effect of the demographic variables of the respondents like gender, age, qualification, parental source of income and locale where they live. Results show that majority of university students does not participate into complex physical activity to manage the stress rather they seek refuge in religious activities to manage their stress.

Mainly students are facing lots of stress from different factors and are not able to control their stress levels and suffer with some health issues which are a huge damage for the younger minds of this generation, which in turn damages the new ideologies which are to be generated as the nation's development is in the hands of young minds. The main objective of the study is to find the stress levels and reasons of stress and the ability of handling stress among young adults (17-22 years) and the sample size is 84 where 64 males and 24 females are responded for the survey and data is collected through primary data collection method with a questionnaire of 25 questions and the results found the factors and level of handling stress among them.

This research aims to investigate university students' levels of dealing with stress, from different types of variables. The study was carried out on a total of 500 individuals, including 346 female and 154 male students studying at Atatürk University Kazim Karabekir Faculty of Education in 2016/2017 academic year. In this work, Oral, Çok ve Kutlu (2005) "The Level of dealing with Stress in Educational System" scale was for the students. SPSS 21 package program was used in the analysis of the data. For the analysis of the data, and in determining the demographics, the frequency distribution was used. T test was applied to examine the relationship between two independent variables and stress coping sub-dimensions and Anova Warians analysis tests were used to examine the relationship between two and over variables and stress subscale sub-dimensions. The difference between the variables has been interpreted on the basis of p0.05 significance level. According to the findings, it was found that, there is a significant difference between individuals' stress coping sub-dimensions and gender, book reading habits and spare time activity. There was no significant difference between age, family structure and monthly income variables.It was found out that the scores of female students were higher than the average scores of male students with regard to studying from students' gender and stress coping levels subscales, preparing for an exam and affective, behavioral sub-dimensions. The students who stated that they had the habit of reading books, were found to have high scores in studying, preparing for an exam and the affective behavioral sub-dimensions. It was deduced that the students who spent their leisure time with their family got higher scores from students who spent their spare times with their friends or alone, with regard to studying, preparing for an exam and the affective behavioral sub-dimensions.In order to make students, more effective and successful in educational system, the factors that affect the stress levels should be determined and similar studies are necessary in order to have positive effects for students, which, constitutes the part of the proposal of our study.

IMPACT OF STRESS ON HUMAN BEHAVIOUR AND ITS MANAGEMENT

In India women stand different in society; which may be due to variety of reasons such as harsh living conditions, difficult life situations, gender discrimination, lack of support from family and others, and lack of job and educational opportunities; render women at risk for stress, depression and psychological disorders. The aim of the present study is to investigate the quality of life in relation to stress and life satisfaction among women students. The sample comprised of 50 post graduate women students with mean age of 22.760 (SD = 1.349), from Aligarh Results of correlation analyses revealed that quality of life of women students was significantly negatively related with experiencing stress while positively correlated with satisfaction of life. Moreover, it was also found that stress was negatively correlated with satisfaction of life among women students. Furthermore, results of t-test analysis revealed that women living with high quality of life scored significantly low on stress level, and high on satisfaction with life as compared to women living with low quality of life. Findings became a basis warning model to development of quality of life among women students for reducing the stress level and to improve life satisfaction.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between job stress and the QoL of working people. A total of 400 validated sets of questionnaire were distributed to respondents in the selected areas of Meru, Klang and the acquired data were analysed using IBM SPSS 22.0. The findings revealed that there was a significant relationship between job stress and the quality of life among employees. The most influential factor on the QoL was job-related stress, followed by organisational, interpersonal, perceived stress and work environment related stress. This study aimed to explore perceived stress and Quality of Life among police personnel living with and without family. The study aimed to find supporting factor as a essential indicator of one " s well-being. Thus, the study aimed to compare the group of police personnel " s staying with family and without family. Total sample of 60 individuals were taken (30 staying with family and 30 staying alone/away from family) age ranging 28-35married males from I.T.B.P. Force from SSBN, Haryana. Stressful life event and WHOQOL-BREF were assessed on the participants. The findings of the study showed that there was statistical difference between both the groups on perceived stress and all domains of quality of life. The findings stated that participants staying with family had low level of stress and better quality of life. Thus, socio emotional support acts as an aid in lowering the level of stress in defense personnel " s. The idea of stress has been applied in both psychological and physiological settings. Quality of life is a broad concept that deals with all aspects of life and how culture influences their status in the society. Stress is a mental emotional disorder faced by a person due to pressure. Such pressure arises from the failure of individuals to fulfill their needs or wants. The pressure felt by someone can come from within or from outside of themselves. Individuals who experience stress need proper management, so as not to cause further harmful effects. One of the stress management method is by providing 5-finger technique therapy. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the 5-finger technique on the high school students’ stress level in Semarang. This study used a Quasi-Experiment Pretest-Posttest design without a control group. The instrument used was a 5-finger technique therapy worksheet, while the stress level was measured using the DASS-42 (Depression Anxiety Stress Scale). An experimental study design with the purpose to find out prevalence and compare cognitive and physical symptoms of stress among B.Sc (Nursing) students in selected nursing college at Srikakulam town, Andhra Pradesh was performed. Stress management techniques training were given to nursing students in experimental group daily for a period of 6 weeks.. The study identified that there is significant decrease in post-test cognitive symptoms of stress in experimental group like indecisiveness, inability to concentrate, poor judgment, trouble thinking clearly, seeing only negative side of the issues, anxious or racing thoughts, constant worrying, loss of objectivity, fearful anticipation that something happens (p<0.05). There is also significant decrease in post-test physical symptoms of stress in experimental group like headache, backache, muscle tension and stiffness, diarrhea, insomnia, chest pain, rapid pulse, weight loss and hair fall(p<0.05). The chi-square values for post-test cognitive symptoms for Experimental and Control groups shows statistical significance at 0.05 level of significance for inability to concentrate (9.33), trouble thinking clearly (0.03), anxious or racing thoughts (1.94) and fearful anticipation that something happens (4.48). The post-test physical symptoms chi-square values for Experimental and Control groups shows statistical significance at 0.05 level for physical symptoms like headache (20.18), backache (12.18), muscle tension and stiffness (4.63), diarrhea (4.75), constipation (6.11), dizziness (6.88), insomnia (34.18), chest pain (7.92) and rapid pulse (47.23). As there was significant decrease in cognitive and physical symptoms of stress, stress management techniques are effective.

Background Mental health problems in young people are an important public health issue. Students leaving their hometown and family at a young age to pursue better educational opportunities overseas are confronted with life adjustment stress, which in turn affects their mental health and academic performance. This study aimed to examine the relationships among stress, coping strategies, and depressive symptoms using the stress coping framework in overseas Chinese university preparatory students in Taiwan. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted at an overseas Chinese university preparatory institute in Taiwan. Of enrolled overseas Chinese university preparatory students at 2009, 756 completed a structured questionnaire measuring stress, strategies for coping with it, and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. Results High levels of stress significantly predicted the adoption of active, problem-focused coping strategies (R 2 = 0.13, p < .01) and passive, emotion-focused coping strategies (R 2 = 0.24, p < .01). Acceptable CFI, SRMR, and RMSEA values from the structural equation modeling analysis demonstrated that the model satisfactorily fits the stress coping framework, after active coping strategies were eliminated from the model. Results from the Sobel test revealed that passive coping strategies mediated the relation between stress and depressive symptoms (z = 8.06, p < .001). Conclusion Our study results suggested that stress is associated with coping strategies and depressive symptoms and passive strategies mediate the relation between stress and depressive symptoms in overseas Chinese university preparatory students.

health psychology report • volume 9(1),  original article background Nursing is a stressful profession, because it is highly specialized work done under conditions of considerable pressure and has consequently a strong psychological impact. Occupational stress has been considered a serious public health problem, especially in the case of the nursing profession, with considerable consequences for the individual, for the quality of his work and for the associated economic costs. Although the topic of stress has become an important field of research, experimental studies on stress management strategies are rather scarce, especially in the case of the so-called risk professions, such as nursing. participants and procedure The present study applied a cognitive-behavioral training program for stress management to a sample of nursing professionals (N = 5) from an intensive care unit. The intervention was applied on the basis of a multiple baseline design. Evaluation of results was carried using quantitative and one qualitative measures. Emphasis was given to evaluation of physiological, cognitive and emotional symptoms of stress. results The main hypotheses seem to have been confirmed, i.e. the stress management program reduces the participants' physiological, cognitive and emotional stress symptoms according to applied assessment instruments. The results show different levels of stress reduction, as well as an improvement of the number and efficacy of the coping skills of the participants. Correlations were found between quantitative measures, between quantitative and qualitative measures, as well as between physiological, cognitive and emotional symptoms of stress. conclusions Research hypotheses were confirmed, i.e., the applied program seems to be able to reduce stress.
