Sample Essay- "The Real Meaning of Honesty"
202.448-7036
(Sample Definition Essay)
I think it was my mother who taught me the meaning of honesty. Not because she actually was honest, but because she lied all the time. She felt that the easiest way out of any given situation was generally the best way out. And, for her, that generally meant telling a “little white lie.” As a young child I thought it was kind of cool. And, naturally, when I would come to her with a concern or question wondering what I should do, she generally advised me to lie.
“Mom, I told Theresa that I would go over to her house, but now I would rather go to Sue’s house to play.”
“Tell Theresa you’re sick,” she would advise. And generally I did. But I didn’t seem blessed with her lack of conscience. On many painful occasions Theresa would find out that I really went to Sue’s house without her. These occasions taught me that it is more painful to be caught in a lie than it is to tell the truth in the first place. I wondered how it was possible that my mother had never learned that lesson.
I started thinking of all the lies that I’d heard her tell. I remembered the time she told someone that her favorite restaurant had closed, because she didn’t want to see them there anymore. Or the time she told Dad that she loved the lawn-mower he gave her for her birthday. Or when she claimed that our phone lines had been down when she was trying to explain why she hadn’t been in touch with a friend of hers for weeks. And what bothered me even more were all the times she had incorporated me into her lies. Like the time she told my guidance counselor that I had to miss school for exploratory surgery, when she really needed me to babysit. And it even started to bother me when someone would call for her and she would ask me to tell them that she wasn’t there.
So, I started my own personal fight against her dishonesty. When I answered the phone and it was someone my mother didn’t want to talk to, I said, “Louise, mom is here, but she doesn’t want to talk to you.” The first time I did it, I think she grounded me, but I refused to apologize. I told her that I had decided that it was wrong to lie. And the next time it happened I did the same thing. Finally, she approached me and said, “I agree that lying is not the best thing to do, but we need to find a way to be honest without being rude.” She admitted that her methods weren’t right, and I admitted that mine were a bit too extreme.
Over the past few years, the two of us have worked together to be honest- and yet kind. Honesty should mean more than not lying. It should mean speaking the truth in kindness. Though I started by trying to teach my mom the importance of honesty, I ended up gaining a deeper understanding of the meaning of the term.
- What is the term that the speaker is trying to define?
- Did someone teach her the meaning of the term, or did she really learn from her own experience?
- Is the term defined here presented with more complex reasoning than a dictionary definition

Stephen L Carter's The Insufficiency Of Honesty
Traditionally, it is agreed that any and every form of telling the truth is always the best thing to do. In the essays of Stephen L Carter and Stephanie Ericsson, this ideal is not exactly true. It is expressed in "The Insufficiency of Honesty" as well as "The Ways We Lie" that honesty is hard to come by and that there is more to it than believed. The authors convey their views by first defining what the concept is, picking it apart, and then use common occurrences for examples of the points they had made.
Analysis Of Stephen Carter The Inssufficiency Of Honesty Essay
Based on Merriam-Webster, Integrity means to have the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles. In the article “The Insufficiency of Honesty” by Stephen Carter, the author described that Integrity is a form of honesty, although honesty itself stand for something else. This is why he sees those two virtues as partly different . Carter realized this difference between complete truth and righteousness. Honesty is to tell the complete truth, but integrity is more about righteousness. Sometimes telling the truth could hurt somebody’s feelings which could be a disaster. “The truth hurts”, but having integrity means to not only be a truthful person, but one with moral values, being able to put other’s first and being able to keep promise. Equaling honesty to integrity is downgrading the great meaning behind the word as the author stated one person “may tell us quite truthfully what they believe without ever taking the time to figure out whether what they believe is good and r...

Amy Rees Anderson as an entrepreneur turned into a counselor and angel investor, shares her opinions on integrity in business and life experiences. Also Brett and Kate McKay take a look at the things that challenge your integrity and the consequence of your choices.
The Insufficiency Of Honesty Analysis
Stephen L. Carter goes on to say, “Although honesty is a virtue of importance, it is a different virtue from integrity” meaning that it is related to integrity but does not define all of it. As individual will listen to what they wan to hear without knowing the true definition of a word like integrity. There is more to it than just speaking the words a person must understand the true definition. A society looks at the word integrity as everyone speaks of this work but society does not know anything rally about it truly. In example to what Carter beliefs that many individuals act up selfishness because society has made them believe that by saying the truth yes do help oneself but is not an act of integrity when the truth hurts those around. The way to look at is society as a whole is becoming more a person can be entirely honest without ever lifting a finger during the hard work of discernment that integrity. Carter gives this example as to how integrity is close to honesty but at the same time not quite. Personal Essay On Integrity
Integrity is the quality of being honest. When you are honest about something or a certain situation you are considered a person of integrity. Also when you have integrity you have strong moral principles. When you have strong moral principles you know what is right and what is wrong. “Having integrity means doing the right thing in a reliable way. It's a personality trait that we admire, since it means a person has a moral compass that doesn't waver. The Importance of Academic Honesty
Honesty and integrity are two major core Catholic and humanist values that many students in modern times seem to lack. According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, honesty is defined as "the quality of being fair and truthful." Honesty plays a huge role in our society and daily lives. Honesty is a key characteristic that makes up a person, and defines who they truly are. Usually, if a person is very honest, which according to Merriam-Webster Dictionary means, “the quality of being honest and fair.” As you can see, the definition of honesty and integrity go hand in hand. Just as Spencer Johnson tells us, “Integrity is telling myself the truth. And honesty is telling the truth to other people.” Without honesty, there is absolutely no integrity. In the past few years, many major corporations conducted tests to determine how much of the world’s population was considered, “honest.” WalletTest.com conducted an experiment in which one hundred wallets were left on the streets on purpose, filled with a good amount of cash, and a picture identification card to explicitly show who the wallet belonged to. Of those one hundred wallets, seventy four of them were returned and twenty six were not. The sample of people they used were of mixed gender, age, and race, giving a good testing sample. The results were good, showing that most people were honest, and the honest people outnumbered the dishonest people nearly three to one. Honesty and integrity does not only play a large role in daily life situations, however. Honesty and integrity play a large role in academics in different levels of expertise: Elementary, High School, and College.
Truth vs. Lie Essay
Being honest and having a reputation of never lying makes people trust them more. People are more likely to come up to a person who tells the truth and ask them a question. They are more likely to get the right answer and not a lie. People who tell the truth are more respected and aren't looked down at for being a liar. People can be trusted more when they constantly tell the truth. When they ask if they can go out and do something, they are more likely to be able to because others trust them and they don't have to worry.
Importance Of Moral Values
Being dishonest may hurt the other person. For instance someone dealing with a dishonest person may begin to feel as if everyone is also being dishonest. With honesty comes trust. Being honest means that people can ask anything and they feel like they can confide in that answer. Honesty is a doorway. Honesty brings admiration. I feel like at work honesty has brought me to the level I am at now. People trusted me with greater responsibility because they knew I would do what is required in the fairest way fit. Being dishonest only makes other people feel unsure to ask. I like to be the person that people can come up and talk to freely and feel as if they truly learned or have taken something from that conversation. Personally I feel as if dishonesty only brings guilt and unwanted problems. Honesty ties into the second moral value I hold closely which is respect. With honesty comes respect. Being honest means that people respect not only the words but the person who the words come from. Respect is a moral value I hold closely because it was instilled in me as a child. In my culture, respect is highly admired. My parents always told me to respect anyone I came into contact
The Importance Of Telling The Truth
I do not know of anyone who wants to be known as Pinocchio, the wooden boy who lies and in a result, makes his nose grow bigger. As an old proverb says, honesty is the best policy. I agree with being honest at all times. First, telling the truth to me, is always the right thing. When I catch someone in a lie, I just think to myself, what has come up of this world? A person’s truths and lies prove who that person is, and what that person is capable of. Second, people can earn a great deal of respect and trust from telling the truth. Now, people trust their “gut feeling”, but someone’s “gut feeling” should always be truthful. Respect is something that is earned, and at sometimes, given to people who do the things that they are supposed to do for themselves and for others. Last, most people were taught to tell the truth at a very young age. A truth is

How to Prevent Oneself from Lying?
People generally lie to avoid getting into trouble and to prevent hurting others. Honest people always have faith in the people whom they are talking to. It is wrong to assume that the listener will reject the truth. To be honest, people must have the courage to say the truth. No one likes to be lied to, and therefore, it is wrong to lie to others. People also have to be diplomatic in their presentation of the truth. They must not be blunt or rude, as it might hurt others. In this way, the true message reaches the listeners, and they take it in without getting emotionally hurt.
Is it okay to be Dishonest at Times
You were undoubtedly trained never to lie by your parents, who preached the importance of telling the truth. Your partner states that the most important thing is, to be honest.
But, according to studies, people do a lot of things wrong when it comes to deceit, truth-telling, and trust, and that, if mastered, lying the right way may actually help develop relationships, trust, and businesses.
You are also more likely to be lied to (and told to lie) than you realize imagine your mother telling you to tell your grandmother how much you enjoyed her food, or you providing incomplete feedback to a coworker.
LYING CAN BE JUSTIFIED IN THE FOLLOWING SCENARIOS
If you are Looking out for Someone's Best Interests:
There are many examples of lying being harmful, and the most harmful lies are those that promote your self-interest at the expense of others.
According to a study, "prosocial" lies—falsehoods intended to benefit others—can help people create trust.
Just keep in mind that lies are most effective when they are not self-serving. It is one thing to tell your friend he or she looks beautiful before a date to boost their self-esteem. However, be warned, saying it solely to push your friend out of the door because you are already late - that might drive you into a selfish zone.
If There is Not Enough Time to Make a Modification:
Let's say your mate inquires about how you think he or she looks shortly before coming on stage for a speaking engagement, or just before reaching the podium, about what you think of the speech. Consider whether the person has the time to react to the information and control the issue, even if you see a stain on his or her dress or think the speech may be improved.
You might accept deception if there is nothing your partner can do to improve or change things right now. As there is nothing he or she can do at the time, lying in this sense is typically comprehended as something which is benefiting the person at the receiving end.
If your significant other can react to the knowledge, however, honesty is the superior option.
If the Person is Not Close to you:
Deception that is mild and well-intentioned can be even more effective in long-distance relationships. Honesty is a lot more perilous in more competitive equations or first interactions, and it can damage relationships and reduce the amount of trust. That is because neither party knows the other's genuine motives, and they may ask aloud, "Is this individual trying to undermine me?"
Still, if you're inclined to provide candid comments to a distant acquaintance or a buddy of a friend, go ahead. Providing the truth while being benevolent—something along the lines of, "I truly want you to succeed, so I am giving you this feedback."
Close friendships, on the other hand, can foster a greater appreciation for candor, and confessing to friends is probably not as horrible as you think. We consistently underestimate how difficult it will be, to tell the truth.

Short Essay About Honesty

The saying’ honesty is the best policy is probably heard by everyone. However, it is hard to be honest with everyone around, and even more, it takes a lot of courage to be honest with yourself. On the other hand, a parent cannot expect their child to be honest in life if they are not honest to themselves. Hence, it would not be unfair to say that honesty is a two-way street. But even if the other person is being dishonest, one should stick to the policy of being honest. The reasons why honesty is the best policy are discussed below.
First of all, honesty is an attribute that helps you develop other traits such as kindness and moral integrity in your personality. Truthfulness is a trait that is instilled in your personality as a kid, and it only works in life if the people around you are truthful with each other. It also helps you to be courageous and say whatever your heart believes in. It also makes you and your opinions authentic. If you are honest, people will rely on you and your opinions if they ever need one.
However, it is very easy to lie to people, but there is no way you can do that to yourself because it will never sustain. You can only have peace of mind if you are truthful in your day-to-day happenings. It fosters a trustworthy relationship between people and helps in bringing people together.
Therefore, honesty is the fastest way to prevent a mistake from turning into a failure, and it’s the first chapter of life when it comes to wisdom. Thereby, one should make an effort to leave a legacy of honesty and truthfulness for their generations to come.
Essay Sample on Why Is It Important to Be Honest

Honesty is the best policy, they say. But, certain situations in life leave you wondering whether or not you should tell the truth. In situations like these, many people say, often go with the fabricated story. It is because they find it easy to get away with things this way. But is it the best way to handle complicated situations? Certainly not because no matter what the consequences may be, being honest should be the only option. This essay will discuss how honesty can take you places in life.
The important reason why is it important to be honest is that it’s the easiest thing to practice to be successful, happy from within, and fulfilled. For instance, if someone is caught in a situation where they have done something wrong and are afraid to tell the truth to their parents when asked, telling lies and deceiving the parents would only make things worse in the long run. They may get away with what they have done, but their conscience will keep nagging them. Besides, if the parents somehow find out the truth later, they may not trust their child anymore. On the other hand, if the child is honest, the parents will probably scold them, but eventually, they will support them and help them get out of any situation they are in. Being honest can cause a moment of discomfort for many people, but talking the truth eventually makes the situation in their favor. Moreover, their honesty would increase their respect in others’ hearts, and they will likely get rewards for being honest. All in all, honesty is about being true to yourself and others about what you want and who you are. It helps promote openness and enables people to establish consistency in how they present the truth.
On the contrary, lying is equally damaging whether people do it to themselves or others. When they lie, they delude themselves into believing what they are saying. Even if it’s a tiny lie, it is damaging, as it will keep getting bigger over time. People who lie confuse themselves and confuse others. Moreover, they lose credibility and put themselves in jeopardy. Frequently, people lie to themselves to do something that they know is wrong. For instance, if they convince themselves to steal from a wicked person, they have probably lied that it is okay to steal from bad people and they need it. It may produce temporary pleasure, but it won’t take the wrongdoer anything.
On the other hand, when people are dishonest to others to create a good image of themselves, they damage their credibility in the long run. For instance, if someone wants to impress their employer in the first interview by deceiving them, it could later harm their work life. Sooner or later, they may find out the truth, and the liar will be in trouble or may have to tell more lies to build up a facade personality. Doing so may help them succeed in the short run, but they can’t go places where honesty and truthfulness can take them.
To conclude, despite the temptation and ease of use, lying gets no one anywhere in the end. On the contrary, dishonest people stay right in their tracks or, much worse, go backward. This is why it is important to rewire the brain about its importance to stay truthful, regardless of the situation. Besides, it is equally important, to be honest with oneself and practice honesty in daily interactions.

Essay about The Moral Permissibility of Lying
The question of what constitutes morality is often asked by philosophers. One might wonder why morality is so important, or why many of us trouble ourselves over determining which actions are moral actions. Mill has given an account of the driving force behind our questionings of morality. He calls this driving force “Conscience,” and from this “mass of feeling which must be broken through in order to do what violates our standard of right,” we have derived our concept of morality (Mill 496). Honesty and integrity are defined as qualities that allow an individual to do the right thing as often and as much as possible, and when they have done they wrong thing admit to what they have done. Honesty is the adherence to the facts and sincerity. To perform honestly would be: to tell the truth, to be able to be trustworthy, to not cheat and to be true to yourself. Honesty is doing the right thing, integrity; following through and being able to be counted on, trustworthy; you will not take credit, money or rewards for things you didn't perform or do, fairness/ honor; meaning what u say, sincerity; and finally you will act and explain yourself as you truly are, genuine. When a person is dishonest they will act in a way that they know is wrong and, if asked to explain, will proceed to lie about what they have done. Being dishonest usually will catch up with the person. If dishonesty lets them get too far, it will go to their head and will take it to an extreme, making it much better to start out honestly. Integrity goes hand in hand with honesty, seeing that each word uses the other in its definition. Integrity is the quality or state of being undivided. It is moral soundness, honesty, and freedom from corrupting influence or motive. It can be used especially with reference to the fulfillment of contracts, the discharge of agencies, or trusts. Integrity allows a person to be proud of what kind of morals they have, what kind of things they do and are proud and unafraid to tell the truth. If a person with integrity has done something wrong, than they probably did not purposely do it and are absolutely fine with admitting to it and taking responsibility for it. . Honesty and integrity also have a meaning for me. I will do my best not to do the wrong thing but if I have chosen to do so, for me to be honest, I will tell the truth to my parents, teachers, friends and anyone I speak to or come in contact with.
